Stanford edges Cougars

Stanford handed Washington State its first loss of the season in Pac-10 Conference women’s soccer play as the Cardinal (10-5-1, 3-0-1) blanked the Cougars 1-0 in Pullman Friday.

Allison Falk scored the game-winning goal for No. 19-ranked Stanford at the 60:12 mark. Brynn Bemis recorded a career-high nine saves for the Cougars (7-5-3, 2-1-1).

•Kelly Menachof and Katie Ratican both scored a pair of goals to fuel California in a 4-1 Pac-10 Conference win over Washington in Seattle.

Melissa Beal opened the scoring for Washington (6-9, 1-3) before the Golden Bears (8-3-4, 1-2-2) rattled off four unanswered tallies.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga saw its four-game unbeaten streak come to an end after a 2-1 West Coast Conference loss to San Diego in Spokane.

Michael Caso scored a pair of second-half goals for the Toreros (8-5-1, 3-4-1), and Tye Perdido scored his third tally of the season for the Bulldogs (6-6-2, 3-4-1) in the 63rd minute.

•Washington battled to a double-overtime 0-0 draw with San Diego State in Seattle.

The Huskies (9-5-1, 2-5-1) outshot the Aztecs (7-5-2, 3-2-1) 20-6.

Volleyball

Washington State won a thrilling first game 35-33 but dropped the final three (30-27, 30-19, 30-19) to Arizona State in Pac-10 Conference action at Tempe, Ariz.

Brittany Johnson led the Cougars (14-9, 2-7) with 16 kills and Kelly Rosin added 12 kills, and both had five blocks. Freshman Kelly Hyder and Corina Beyer had 26 digs and 40 assists, respectively.

Nicole Morton had a match-high 20 kills for the Sun Devils (11-9, 3-6), and teammate Sydney Donahue had 35 digs.

•Christal Morrison had 24 kills and 16 digs to lead No. 6 Washington (17-3, 7-2) in a 30-21, 30-20, 24-30, 30-26 Pac-10 Conference win over Arizona (10-11, 1-8) in Tucson, Ariz.

•Angie Florence landed 12 kills and served up seven aces to lead Whitworth in a 30-22, 30-28, 30-21 sweep of Lewis & Clark (6-15, 4-7) in Northwest Conference play at Portland.

Holly Tomlin added 11 blocks for the Pirates (6-16, 5-6), who also received a team-high 16 digs from Cassie Moore.

•Ashlee Lupfer recorded game highs of 18 kills and 29 digs, but Community Colleges of Spokane fell in five to Treasure Valley (11-11, 3-6) in Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges play in Ontario, Ore.

Kim Cox landed four aces for the Sasquatch (14-16, 4-5), who opened up with wins of 21-30, 25-30, but dropped the final three 30-27, 31-29, 15-12.

•Second-ranked North Idaho College fell to Salt Lake CC (23-13) 28-30, 30-25, 30-23, 30-20 in a Scenic West Athletic Conference upset in Salt Lake City.

Cintia Alessi led the Cardinals (28-4) with 14 kills.

Women’s basketball

Kyla Evans, the reigning Most Valuable Player of the Caribou Trail League, has committed to Eastern Washington.

The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 21 points and nine rebounds as a junior at Brewster, Wash. She considered Lewis-Clark State College, Western Washington, Central Washington and UNLV.

Golf

The Circling Raven Golf Club in Worley will close for the season following play on Sunday.
