Three area Boy Scouts attain Eagle rank
Three area residents recently received their Eagle Scout awards, the highest award given in the Boy Scouts.
John Maccini, a member of Troop 80, is a student at Mt. Spokane High School. For his project Maccini organized a group of volunteers to refurbish an old gazebo at the Fairwood Village Retirement Community. He is the son of Dave and Merry Maccini of Colbert.
Grant and Ian Turner, members of Troop 228, are students at Coeur d’Alene High School. Ian Turner constructed equipment storage boxes and bat racks for the Hayden Little League baseball complex for his project. Grant Turner built and installed a Smokey Bear fire danger sign for the Sagle Fire Department for his project. They are the sons of Steve and Diane Turner.
Military
“Army Pvt. William Miller recently graduated from basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Miller is the son of Joann Macken of Warden, Wash.
“Four area residents recently graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio.
Air Force Airman Breeana Mullen, the daughter of Shannon Hintz of Moses Lake, is a 2000 graduate of Moses Lake High School.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Shane Peacock is the son of John Peacock of Spokane Valley and Debra Johnson of Nampa, Idaho.
Air Force Airman Jeremy Smith is the son of David and Terri Smith of Deer Park.
Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Stephon Westfall, a 2004 graduate of Cheney High School, is the son and stepson of Heidi Westfall and Paul Salerno of Spokane.
“Brian Hutton recently graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis. Hutton, a student at the University of Montana, is a 2003 graduate of Gonzaga Prep. He is the son of Kevin and Cheryl Hutton of Spokane.
Debate
Gonzaga University student Nick Bormann of Spokane recently took second place in a debate tournament hosted by the University of California-Berkeley. He and teammate Grace Saez of Las Vegas faced debaters from more than 40 other colleges and universities.
Graduate
Matthew Halloran of Newman Lake recently graduated from Northern Michigan University. He earned a bachelor’s degree in sports science.

Pentico, a 2004 graduate of University High School, is the son of Dolan and Sandy Pentico of Spokane.
Sara Ermitano was recently awarded a $1,250 Pemco Educational Scholarship for the 2006-07 academic year at Eastern Washington University. The scholarship is awarded to minority students studying education with a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Ermitano, a 2005 graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of Keith and Rosemary Ermitano of Spokane.
Heatherann Franz of Spokane received a $900 Elizabeth Cheney Scholarship. The award is given to senior women with a grade-point average. of 3.0 or above. Franz is a 1993 graduate of Lewis and Clark High School.
Elina Gee received a $700 Fred Johns Scholarship. The award is given to public administration majors with a grade-point average. of 3.0 or above. Gee, the daughter of Gary and Kathryn Durheim of Mead, is a 2000 graduate of Mt. Spokane High School.
Jennifer Gilliam received a $1,100 Spokane Central Lions Club Scholarship. The award is given to graduate students majoring in special education with a grade-point average. of 3.0 or higher. Gilliam, a 2002 graduate of Shadle Park High School, is the daughter of Jan Gilliam of Spokane.
Stephanie Goodman received a $2,400 John Joy Scholarship. The award is given to students studying science-related majors with a grade-point average. of 2.5 or above. Goodman, the daughter of Steven and Ruth Goodman of Spokane, is a 2000 graduate of Ferris High School.
Timothy Hill received a $4,500 Orland and Bernice Killin Scholarship. The award is given to incoming freshman with a 4.0 grade-point average. Hill, the son of Martin and Jean Hill of Spokane, is a 2006 graduate of North Central High School.
Mark Lund was recently awarded a $1,050 Martin and Helen Terzieff Scholarship. The award is given to juniors and seniors majoring in communications. Lund, a 2001 graduate of Mead High School, is the son of Lynn and Marilyn Lund.
Bridget Hillier-Vogel received a $2,500 R.G. Andres Trust Scholarship. The award is given to Northwest residents studying education. Hillier-Vogel, a 2004 graduate of University High School, is the daughter of Vernon and Dorothy Vogel of Spokane Valley.
Tami McGoldrick received a $1,150 Marjorie Benedict-Holman Scholarship. The award is given to single mothers with a grade-point average. of 3.0 or above. McGoldrick, a 1999 graduate of Ferris High School, is the daughter of George and Connie McGoldrick of Spokane.
Rebekah Schweikert received a $250 Class of the 1950s Scholarship. Schweikert, the daughter of Glen and Michelle Schweikert of Spokane, is a 2006 graduate of University High School.
“Jessica Johnson and Laura Smith were recently awarded $1,000 Alumni Scholarships. The award is given to children and grandchildren of EWU alumni. They must carry a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher. Johnson, the daughter of Julie Johnson of Spokane, is a 2005 graduate of Mead High School. Smith, of Spokane, is a 2004 graduate of Shadle Park High School.
“Dawn Olmo and Bjorn Herrman were recently awarded $2,500 Transfer Honors Scholarships. The award is given to transfer students with an AA degree and a grade-point average of 3.7 or higher. Olmo, a 1994 graduate of North Central High School, is the daughter of Joseph Rusho Sr. of Newport, Wash., and Joy Maddy of Puyallup, Wash. Herrman, of Spokane, is the son of Thomas and Sabine Herrmann of Germany. He graduated from high school in 2000 in Berlin.
Volunteer award
Victor Buksbazen of Spokane was recently awarded a Bronze Presidential Volunteer Service Award. The award is given by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to those who have volunteered for at least two years or 4,000 hours. Buksbazen has been a volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Spokane County for five years.
Idaho
Four of the five winners of the Fair Housing art contest are residents of North Idaho. Nearly 80 Idaho high school students submitted drawings, writing and graphic designs to the contest. Winners were recognized during the recent Idaho Conference on Housing in Boise and their work will appear in a 2007 Fair Housing Calendar.
North Idaho winners are: Second place, Michelle Morgan, Lakeland High School (Hayden); third place, Brittany Tanner, Lakeland High School; and fourth place, Mary Roskovich, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy. Jeremiah Hatch of Sandpoint also was selected to have his writing featured in the calendar.
