Chavez, Dons take down Cougars

The Spokesman-Review

Brian Chavez had a home run, triple and drove in five runs to lead the San Francisco Dons to an 8-1 non-conference baseball win over visiting Washington State Monday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The Cougars (16-13) scored in the third, parlaying a single and steal of third by Zach Borba with an infield out and USF error into an unearned run.

USF (16-15) pitchers limited WSU to four hits, just two after the fourth inning.

•Brandon Harmon, a junior pitcher for the Gonzaga University baseball team, has been named the West Coast Conference pitcher of the week, the first of his career.

Harmon (4-4) led the Bulldogs to a 2-1 series win over then-No. 20 San Diego last weekend, pitching a four-hit, 6-1 win in the finale after collecting a save in the opener.

It’s the third weekly honor for the Bulldogs in two weeks. Last week, Jeremy Stumetz was pitcher of the week and third baseman Darin Holcomb shared player of the week.

Men’s golf

Whitworth placed two in the top five and turned in the second-day’s low score to tie for first place in the Northwest Conference Spring Classic that came to a close Monday in Graham, Wash.

Whitworth and Linfield both had 602 team scores, the Pirates charging into the first-place tie with a 293 team total Monday led by Jordan Carter’s 1-under-par 71, the only sub-par round of the tournament. Carter had a 148 to tie for second, three shots out of first, and teammate Bobby Elder’s 152 was fifth.

Track and field

Whitworth junior Brandon Howell, who won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 54.23 seconds and anchored the Pirates’ come-from-behind win in the 4x100 relay during the Buc Scoring Invitational on Saturday, was named the Northwest Conference men’s track athlete of the week.

Softball

Lacey Jordan of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) was one walk away from a perfect game, pitching a no-hitter to lead the Eagles to a 14-0 win in six innings at Bellevue Christian in a non-league game Monday.

She struck out five and drove in one run. Tanya Crouse drove in three runs for the Eagles.

Wrestling

Clete Hanson of East Valley placed seventh at 171 pounds in the senior high school nationals during the weekend in Virginia Beach, Va.

Results of two other Spokane wrestlers who had top-16 placings in the meet were reported in Monday’s paper.
