CCS splits doubleheader

Community Colleges of Spokane split an NWAACC baseball doubleheader with visiting Wenatchee Valley on Wednesday. The Sasquatch won the second game 10-8 after losing the first game 7-1.

In the opener, CCS scored its lone run in the fifth inning. Brian Yardley tallied three hits for the Sasquatch. A.J. Proszek (4-2) was saddled with the loss.

In the second game, Stefan Malkuch held the Knights scoreless in the final two innings to earn the save for CCS. Brian Yardley and Chris Bozo led the Sasquatch (15-12, 5-4) with three hits. Andy Osler had a triple for Wenatchee (19-12, 6-4).

•Also in the NWAACC, Walla Walla had four straight hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to steal an 8-6 win from visiting Big Bend. Cesar Lopez led Walla Walla (19-6, 6-2) with four hits. Kory Twede was 3 for 4 for Big Bend (10-14, 3-5). The second game was suspended in the 12th inning by darkness with the score tied at 2. It will be completed at Big Bend on May 9.

Football

Former Eastern Washington defensive back Isaiah Trufant was named Defensive Player of the Week for the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League.

•The Spokane Shock fell from No. 2 to No. 8 in the arenafootball2 coaches’ poll this week after their home loss to Quad City on Saturday.

EWU’s David Paul and Carolee Gutierrez garnered Big Sky Conference Field Athletes of the Week for the second consecutive week for their performances at the Pelluer Invitational last Friday.
