Prairie Voices

Q: Five people chosen at random were asked: What do you think elected officials should be doing to ensure that development of the Rathdrum Prairie doesn’t adversely affect your quality of life?

Vernon Vinyard of Post Falls: “I don’t care what they do. I think there is a lot of skittishness with that prairie, but what else are you going to do with it? … I’m glad they developed it, I believe in making a place comfortable.”

Bartell Leffew of Post Falls: “They are covering up too much farmland … It won’t (make a difference) right now, but it will sooner or later as more farmland is covered up and there aren’t any more (locally grown crops.)”

Dorothy M. Littlepage of Coeur d’Alene: “I can’t answer that truthfully, I’m too easy to please, I guess. I just don’t like people leaving messes. I don’t mind as long as they keep the place tidy and nice … I’m going to start reminding people to throw away their garbage in the trash cans.”

Stacey Vahey of Rathdrum: “Gosh, I don’t know, I just moved here … I don’t think (the developments are) an eyesore because I come from California … I don’t know, you asked the wrong question!”

Richard Conkey of Athol: “I think that they need to look at not only the water and sewer, but emergency services – fire and police; the funding for adequate coverage … I think that (the city) is strained right now.”
