Albertsons store gets fresh look

Albertsons is putting a fresh face on its Liberty Lake store with a $1.4 million remodel that will expand departments offering produce and other fresh and healthy items.

The 50,000-square-foot store is the first Albertsons in the area to get the upgrades, said Stephanie Martin, spokeswoman for the Fullerton, Calif.-based grocery chain.

Liberty Lake is on the early end of a company plan to upgrade 550 Albertsons supermarkets, which are owned by SuperValu Inc. and are scattered throughout an eight-state region, Martin said. Albertsons has 25 stores in the Inland Northwest. Martin said the renovations are designed to enhance displays and expand departments that offer fresh meat, seafood, deli and other foods.

Starting in June, remodeling work will be done at night, to allow the store to stay open, and construction will wrap up in mid-October, Martin said.

Upscale condo shells on radar

Condos that are sold as shells are increasingly appearing in the Spokane real estate market.

Several projects, with units costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, are being built sans interior finishes, such as cabinetry, flooring and lighting.

Peaceful Valley has a four-condo building that has shells with two and three bedrooms costing $610,000 to $780,000. Shells range from 1,900 to 2,470 square feet.

The units offer views of the Spokane River, enclosed heated parking, gas furnaces, storage rooms, interior parking, security cameras and other perks.

George Doran General Contractors, Inc. is building the condos, which are located on Water Avenue near Cedar Street.

New Web site looks at property

Two local business owners are seeing some gains in traffic on a Web site they started to help people find commercial property and apartments in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. had 8,700 hits last week, said Brad Davis, who owns the Web site with his wife and business partner, Susan Davis.

The couple started the Web site after they spent considerable time searching for commercial space to open Chocolate Apothecary, a gourmet chocolate café. Although a couple other sites, including, have online commercial listings, Davis thought there was room for a locally-focused site that combined residential rentals with commercial listings.

As the Web site gains ground, the couple has also seen their Chocolate Apothecary business, at the Flour Mill, blossom.

After nearly two years in business they have applied to Washington State for approval to offer franchises. currently has 80 properties, split between commercial listings and rental apartments and homes. Some are paid customers, others are imported listings.

Visitors to the site don’t have to register, Davis said, adding, “Anyone can search anything for free.”

Home improvement show coming up

The Spokane Home Builders Association is hosting the Premier Home Improvement Show on April 20-22 at the Spokane County Fair & Expo Center. The show, sponsored by Direct Buy, will feature nearly 200 vendors of products and services.

As a special addition to the 2007 show, the SHBA Remodeler’s Council is sponsoring “The Dawg Pound”, showcasing 10 custom-built doghouses arranged on a landscaped display. Attendees can purchase raffle tickets for houses with all proceeds going to SpokAnimal CARE and the Spokane Humane Society.
