NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Samsung 500

Site: Fort Worth, Texas. Schedule: Friday, qualifying (Speed Channel, 3 p.m.); Sunday, race (FOX, 10:30 a.m.). Track: Texas Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 501 miles, 334 laps. Last race: Jimmie Johnson withstood teammate Jeff Gordon’s bumping and banging for much of the last 53 laps at Martinsville, Va., and held him off by a front bumper to win for the third time in six NASCAR Nextel Cup races on April 1. Last year: Kasey Kahne became the 12th different winner in as many Nextel Cup races held at Texas Motor Speedway, yet he still managed a first — by doing it from the pole. Kahne sped way from the field after the final restart with 17 laps to go. Fast facts: Dale Earnhardt Jr. has jumped from 14th in the standings to fifth over the past three events after finishing a season-best fifth at Martinsville. Earnhardt was once 40th after failing to finish the first two races of the season. … Texas is one of three tracks where standings leader Jeff Gordon has failed to win. The others are Homestead and Phoenix. … Hendrick Motorsports is trying to become the first team since Petty Enterprises in 1971 to win five straight races. … Chevrolets have won five of the first six races this season. Ford has the other victory. … Tony Stewart won the most recent Texas event on Nov. 5. … Kurt Busch’s crew chief has taken a leave of absence to be with his wife as she battles cancer. Troy Raker was named interim crew chief for Busch at Penske Racing. He’ll take over for Roy McCauley while he cares for his wife, Amy, who was diagnosed with leukemia in February. Next race: Subway Fresh Fit 500, April 21, Avondale, Ariz.

NASCAR BUSCH

O’Reilly 300

Site: Fort Worth, Texas. Schedule: Thursday, qualifying, 4 p.m.; Saturday, race (ESPN2, 11:30 a.m.). Track: Texas Motor Speedway (quad-oval, 1.5 miles, 24 degrees banking in turns). Race distance: 300 miles, 200 laps. Last race: Carl Edwards raced to his second consecutive Busch victory, easily winning the Pepsi 300 in chilly conditions at Nashville Superspeedway to extend his lead in the season standings. The Nextel Cup driver led the final 25 laps and crossed the finish line 4.7 seconds ahead of David Reutimann. Last year: Kurt Busch became the fifth driver in Busch Series history to win in his debut, leading the final 70 laps — including an extra six after a flurry of late cautions at Texas Motor Speedway. The previous driver to win in his series debut was Terry Labonte in 1985. Fast facts: Edwards and Jeff Burton have won their last two Busch races. Edwards has taken the last two events. Burton won the two before that, but didn’t compete at Bristol or Nashville. Ryan Newman was the last driver to win three straight races in succession in 2005 and also won in five straight starts that season. … Kevin Harvick and Mark Martin share the series lead with three wins at Texas. … Greg Biffle has three runner-up finishes at Texas, but no victories. Next race: Bashas’ Supermarkets 200, April 20, Avondale, Ariz.

CHAMP CAR WORLD SERIES

Grand Prix of Long Beach

Site: California. Schedule: Friday, qualifying, 2 p.m.; Saturday, qualifying, 2 p.m.; Sunday, race (NBC, 1 p.m.). Track: Streets of Long Beach (temporary road course, 1.968 miles, 11 turns). Race distance: 159.408 miles, 81 laps. Last race: Will Power became the first Australian to win a race in the Champ Car or its predecessor, CART, leading 38 of the 68 laps en route to the victory at the season-opening Vegas Grand Prix. Power won by about a half-mile on the 2.44-mile, 12-turn temporary circuit. Last year: Sebastien Bourdais had an overpowering victory in the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Winning at Long Beach for the second straight year, Bourdais trailed only after a midrace pit stop, leading 70 of 74 laps on the course that threads its way through city streets tucked between downtown and the Pacific Ocean. Paul Tracy, Bruno Junqueira and A.J. Allmendinger didn’t make it through the first turn of the race. Fast facts: Three-time defending series champion Bourdais and heralded rookies Graham Rahal and Simon Pagenaud all failed to finish the race at Vegas. Bourdais started 16th after a crash in qualifying, overcame three flat tires in the first 24 laps to reach third place and then hit a concrete barrier on lap 30 and ended up 13th. … Tracy has won this race four times. … Katherine Legge finished sixth at Las Vegas, the best by a woman on a road or street course. … Bourdais set track qualifying records last year with a time of 66.886 seconds and a speed of 105.924 mph. … The winner of this race has gone on to claim the series title 10 times. Next race: Grand Prix of Houston, April 22

FORMULA ONE

Bahrain Grand Prix

Race distance: 192.09 miles, 57 laps. Last race: World champion Fernando Alonso won the Malaysian Grand Prix to hand new team McLaren-Mercedes its first F1 win since 2005. Rookie Lewis Hamilton, the series’ first black driver, added to McLaren’s resurgence by finishing second ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who won the season-opening Australian GP last month. Last year: Alonso won the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, holding off a challenge from Michael Schumacher. Kimi Raikkonen of McLaren-Mercedes finished third after he started last on the grid due to car failure in qualification. Fast facts: The last time a McLaren won a Grand Prix was October 2005 in Japan, when Raikkonen claimed victory. … The 2004 event marked the first time since 1958 that the series held a race in the Middle East. … Raikkonen finished third in last year’s race despite starting last. Next race: Spanish Grand Prix, May 14, Barcelona.

Johnson had a pass of 6.842 seconds at 202.42 mph, while Connolly was timed at 6.874 at 202.00 mph. Fast facts: John Force Racing sat out the Texas event following the death of driver Eric Melden on March 23. The team is expected to return this weekend. … Line’s win gave KB Racing three victories in the first four events. … Hartley advanced to his first Top Fuel final in 57 races. … Craig Treble jumped from 10th in the Pro Stock Motorcycle standings to fourth after advancing to the final at Texas. Next event: Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals, April 29, Atlanta.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Mike Skinner started on the pole and stayed out front nearly all day at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway on March 31, leading all but seven of 253 laps to win his third consecutive race. Coming off victories at California and Atlanta, Skinner set a series record by leading 246 laps and won for the 22nd time in his career. He became the second driver in the series to win twice on the small, tight oval. Next race: O’Reilly Auto Parts 250, April 28, Kansas City, Kan.

INDY RACING LEAGUE

Last race: Helio Castroneves cruised to an easy victory on April 1, running a nearly perfect race to win the Honda St. Petersburg Grand Prix for the second straight year. Castroneves, who started from the pole, led for all but five of the 100 laps on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn street circuit. He pulled away from runner-up Scott Dixon on restarts after several caution flags and won by 0.6007 seconds — about eight car-lengths. Kanaan finished third for the same 1-2-3 finish as last year. Next race: Indy Japan 300, April 21, Suzuka.
