White House says e-mails recoverable
The White House should be able to recover an undetermined number of e-mails – perhaps millions of messages – that accidentally disappeared from its servers during a program conversion, an administration official said Monday.
“We are aware that there could have been some e-mails that were not automatically archived because of a technical issue,” said White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino.
“But given the complex nature of this issue, it might take us a little while to identify those. We do, however, know that most – all of those e-mails should be available on backup tapes.”
This issue is separate from the White House acknowledgment that aides to President Bush have improperly used e-mail accounts created by the Republican Party to conduct official White House business, and that an undetermined number of these e-mails have been lost.

Natural Balance recalls pet food
Natural Balance Pet Foods recalled two kinds of pet food after reports of animals vomiting and experiencing kidney problems, the Food and Drug Administration said Monday.
The recall includes all date codes of Venison & Brown Rice Dry Dog Food and Venison & Green Pea Dry Cat Food. The company does not know the cause of the problem but said it is focused on one particular lot.
Natural Balance Pet Foods is working with the FDA to investigate the matter and is urging consumers to not feed either product to their animals.

Immigration inquiry follows fatal crash
A sport utility vehicle carrying suspected illegal immigrants rolled several times in southeastern Utah on Monday, killing eight men and injuring seven others.
Federal immigration agents were investigating it as a possible case of human trafficking, said Trooper Preston Raban, a spokesman for the Utah Department of Public Safety.
The driver was trying to avoid an animal when the vehicle went off the road in a remote area near the Utah-Arizona line around 3:30 a.m., said Lt. Todd Peterson of the Utah Highway Patrol.
The vehicle carrying 15 people was registered to an owner in Mesa, Ariz., but driven by a 30-year-old man from Mexico, Raban said.
The driver, who was not immediately identified, fled the scene and was found hiding in the desert about two miles away, Peterson said. He was being held at the San Juan County jail.

Falling flagpole kills kindergartener
High winds toppled a flagpole onto a kindergartner during recess at an elementary school Monday, killing the girl, a school spokeswoman said. The accident occurred in an interior courtyard at Roosevelt Primary School in Detroit’s northern suburbs.
About 15 other children were in the courtyard at the time, but none was injured, said district spokeswoman Stephanie Hall. They were taken inside while the principal and two teachers remained with the 5-year-old girl, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
