Bayview-Athol get more policing volunteers

Herb Huseland Correspondent

A whirlwind of events surrounded the opening of spring activities in Bayview, starting with the graduation of 12 candidates for the Citizens On Patrol Program.

Ten of the graduates will join the eight volunteers now on duty in the Bayview and Athol areas.

COPPS volunteers patrol rural areas, checking on shut-ins, vacant vacation homes and elderly people. They also assist with crowd control and perform other assigned duties. They do not have the power of arrest.

Graduation took place April 4 at the Bayview Community Center.

Happy 80th birthday, Jim

An estimated 150 to 200 guests showed up April 7 for the communitywide birthday party in honor of Jim MacDonald’s 80th birthday.

Jim sprang for all the cake and ice cream the crowd could eat.

Easter weekend ended with the kids’ egg hunts on Saturday, followed by Easter brunches at the Captain’s Wheel and the Button Hook. The weather held, and everyone had a great time.

Big fish, big cash at derby

K&K annual Lake Pend Oreille Fishing Derby will be April 28 through May 6.

Entrants can get rules and applications at area sporting-goods stores and local marinas. Registration is $30.

More than $23,000 in prizes are potentially available.

The two main divisions are rainbow and mackinaw. First prize for each is $3,000; second, $1,500; and third, $1,000. If a state record is broken, the mackinaw winner will get an additional $2,500, while the rainbow trout winner will get another $3,000.

Prizes in the youth division, for ages 9 to 13 are $300, $200 and $100 respectively, while anglers 8 and under will receive various trophies and prizes.

The derby will kick off with the Bayview Chamber of Commerce pancake breakfast, hosted by the Captain’s Wheel restaurant and staffed by chamber volunteers.

The annual fundraiser benefits the many good causes funded by the chamber. The breakfasts are top-notch, too.
