Just for kids

Keep an eye out for fishing events geared especially to children, including the Washington Fishing Kids program, which provides fishing gear the participants can take home after their trout-fishing session at specially stocked waters. These events are scheduled for:

•May 5 at Clear Lake, for kids ages 5-14. Preregistration required. Call (509) 477-2166.

•June 9 at Gilchrist Pond near Colfax. Preregister at (509) 397-6290.

In addition, Free Fishing Day events often are scheduled in the Coeur d’Alene area (June 9 this year). Info: (208) 769-1414.

Time to comment

Several proposals for changing fishing rules for North Idaho waters are being proposed at meetings this week, including tonight in Kellogg, April 24 in Bonners Ferry and April 25 in Sandpoint. To get the proposals and comment, contact the Fish and Game regional office in Coeur d’Alene, (208) 769-1414, or e-mail Ned Horner, nhorner@idfg.idaho.gov.

•Washington is accepting public suggestions for fishing regulations proposals through June 1. Information about the sportfishing rule-change process and forms needed to submit proposals can be found at wdfw.wa.gov/fish/regs /rule_proposals/index.htm. A rule-change packet also can be obtained by calling (360) 902-2700.

Accessible fishing

Many of the good fishing waters in Eastern Washington have public wheelchair accessible fishing facilities.

Park manages resort

Nine Mile Resort on Lake Spokane (Long Lake) opened for the season Friday, a couple of weeks earlier than normal and under new management.

Riverside State Park has signed a 30-year lease with Avista Utilities to manage the resort, which is on the south side of the reservoir two miles downstream from Nine Mile Dam.

The resort has 27 RV sites, five campsites, a picnic shelter, swimming beach, acres of green grass, boat docks and the best early-season public boat launch on the lake.

The resort is not yet on the Washington State Parks statewide camping reservation system.

Until then, Riverside State Park will be taking reservations for RV and tent sites at (509) 465-5064.
