Volunteers provide net profit for anglers

Fishing at several waters in the Spokane region gets a boost from area citizens who maintain net pens to raise and release trout supplied by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Among them, Davis and Diamond lakes and the Pend Oreille River in Pend Oreille County; Newman in Spokane County; Deer, Loon and Waitts in Stevens County and Curlew in Ferry County.

At Lake Roosevelt volunteers maintain more than 50 net pens to raise and release nearly 500,000 rainbows each May. Roosevelt’s rainbow fishery peaks in the fall and winter, when these fish grow to 15 inches are larger.

Potholes Reservoir also has a productive rainbow net-pen project at Mar-Don Resort.
