Area Roundup: WSU tops No. 12 Arizona

Nick Ison (4-5) allowed two hits over 7 1/3 innings as Washington State (18-18, 2-9) topped No. 12 Arizona (31-8, 9-2) 4-3 in a Pac-10 baseball game Saturday at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman.

Mike Gilbert went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead the Cougars’ offense.

WSU’s Ross Humes worked the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his seventh save of the season.

“Evan Wells had a career-high four hits, including a two-run home run, as host Gonzaga topped Saint Mary’s (16-22-1, 0-11) 7-2 in a West Coast Conference game at Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Clayton Mortensen earned the win for GU (25-18, 8-3) after allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out eight over eight innings.

“Mead graduate Chad Flett allowed nine hits and struck out six in the complete game as Whitworth edged visiting Pacific Lutheran 5-4 in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Merkel Field.

In the second game, Tyler Green hit a grand slam in the Lutes’ seven-run third inning as PLU routed Whitworth (13-20, 9-11) 14-0.

Kael Fisher earned the win for the Lutes (28-7, 17-3) after allowing four hits and striking out 12 in the complete-game shutout.

“CC Spokane (19-14, 9-6) swept host Columbia Basin (25-11, 9-7) in a NWAACC doubleheader at Pasco.

Brett Henry hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth as the Sasquatch won the opener 11-8. In the second game, Braden Friesz hit a two-RBI double in the fourth and CCS won 6-2.

Cole Janini added an RBI double in the fifth for the Sasquatch.

“Southern California (21-19, 4-7) scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead and held on to beat Washington (19-18, 5-6) 5-2 in a Pac-10 game in Seattle.

Right fielder Matt Hague led the UW offense, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Track and field

Four meet records were broken at the eighth annual Cougar Invitational Track and Field meet at Mooberry Track in Pullman.

WSU’s Sarah Burns won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 41 feet, 1 3/4 inches. Burns notched the sixth-best leap in WSU history and an NCAA Regional Qualifying mark. She surpassed WSU’s Blessing Ufodiama’s 2003 mark of 40-6 3/4.

Idaho’s Russ Winger, competing unattached, won the discus with a throw of 193-6, breaking former Cougars All-American Ian Waltz’ 2000 mark of 192-11.

Two Canadian javelin throwers also broke records. Brooke Pighin won the women’s event at 151-3, topping Idaho’s Sarah Fischer’s 2002 mark of 149-7. Shae Murray won the men’s javelin at 237-7, breaking Eastern Washington’s Ryan Cole’s 2000 mark of 225-2.

WSU’s McKenzie Garberg won the shot put (48-3.5), discus (159-8) and hammer (194-9), all with NCAA RQ marks.

For the men, the Cougars’ Robert Williams posted victories in the 110-meter high hurdles (14.30 seconds) and the 400 hurdles (53.54).

Three Idaho members reached NCAA RQ marks. Melinda Owen and K.C. Dahlgren both hit RQ marks in the pole vault. Owen won the event with a WAC-leading height of 13-1 3/4 and Dahlgren finished second with a vault of 12-5 1/2. Jake Boling finished third in the hammer with a RQ mark toss of 194-6.

“EWU’s Camille Moseley set a personal record in the 1,500 at the Oregon Invitational in Eugene. Her time of 4:36.87, worth second place in her section, ranks fourth in Eastern history.

The Eagles’ David Paul took first in the discus (177-0).

Rebekah Noble (Rogers High) won the 800 in 2:03.22.

“Ben Spaun won the 110 hurdles (15.57) and 400 hurdles (55.27), leading the Whitworth men to a third-place finish at the Northwest Conference Championships in Tacoma.

Cody Stelzer (high jump, 6-7), Jeff Kintner (discus, 143-8) and Joey VanHoomissen (hammer, 156-3) also won individual events for the Pirates.

For the women, Suzy Viducich won the high jump with a season-best leap of 5-3 1/4, leading Whitworth to a fourth-place finish.

Kristen Dormaier scored in four events for the Pirates. She was second in the triple jump (34-10 1/2), fourth in the long jump (16-1), fifth in the high jump (4-7 1/2) and fifth in the 100 (13.31).

Softball

No. 8 Whitworth swept visiting Willamette (17-14, 11-11) in a Northwest Conference doubleheader at Marks Field in Spokane.

In the opener, Lacy Parry hit a grand slam in the Pirates’ five-run second as Whitworth won 8-2. Jessie LaPlante (16-0) earned the win after allowing seven hits while striking out six in the complete game.

In the second game, Jennifer Eckhoff (4-1) pitched a complete-game two-hitter as the Pirates won 8-0. Whitworth (27-3, 22-0) set a school record for winning 14 games in a row.

Tennis

No. 6 Whitworth defeated No. 5 Puget Sound 5-4 to take fifth place at the Northwest Conference Championships in Yakima.

Scott Donnell, Michael Carlson, Curran Scott and Austin Abelar all won their singles matches for the Pirates.

On the women’s side, No. 5 Whitworth topped No. 6 Willamette 5-4 to take fifth place.

Betsy Johnson, Taryn Smith and Justine Hays all won their singles matches for the Pirates.

Rowing

The Gonzaga men’s team recaptured the Fawley Cup after defeating Washington State at the 2,000-meter Silver Lake course in Medical Lake.

The Bulldogs’ varsity 8 boat finished in 6 minutes, 18.94 seconds while the Cougars crossed the finish line in 6:32.20.

GU also earned victories in the junior varsity 8 and the junior varsity 4.
