Locally: Shadle freshman earns Pan Am silver in judo

Carly Marcella of Spokane, a freshman at Shadle Park High School, had an impressive outing in her first appearance in judo competition at the Pan American Juvenile Championships in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, last week.

In the division for 15-16-year-olds, Marcella earned the silver medal in the 40kg competition.

Marcella was one of eight silver medalists on a U.S. team that also captured two gold medals in harvesting 12 medals overall.

Baseball

Community Colleges of Spokane has signed 17 high school seniors to letters of intent, including four from Greater Spokane League schools and one from Post Falls.

Signing with the Sasquatch from the GSL are outfielder/pitcher Mark Purser and right-handed pitcher Paul Smith, both from Mt. Spokane; infielder Ryan Simmelink from Central Valley; and first baseman Cory Swennumson from North Central.

Brandon Haas is a right-handed pitcher from Post Falls.

Also slated to join CCS in the fall are left-handed pitcher Mike Richard and RHP Aaron Reinland, both from DeSales; outfielder Matt Starr, Inglemoor of Kenmore, Wash.; Casey Mitchell, LHP/infielder, Capital of Olympia; Justin Loya, infielder, Durango of Las Vegas; and Felix Segovia, catcher, Las Vegas High.

Also, Colby Crawford, RHP/outfielder, Eastmont of East Wenatchee; Ian Atkinson, infielder, Mt. Si of North Bend, Wash.; Travis Bradshaw, RHP, Woodinville, Wash.; Adam Hill, LHP, Wenatchee; and Jordan Johnson, utility/RHP, and Kevin Ricker, shortstop, both Kentwood of Kent, Wash.

“Community College of Spokane is preparing to honor the 1987 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges champions before its final home game May 12.

Bowling

Local bowlers held eight top-five spots after the first week of the Washington State United States Bowling Congress Tournament in Spokane.

Carl Haskell of Nine Mile Falls led handicap singles with an 822. Herbert Ekenbarger of Spokane was fourth with a 742.

In handicap doubles, Andy Miller and Paul Sturtz of Nine Mile Falls were third (1,471) with Stephen Smith and Larry Bates of Spokane fifth (1,423).

Bates was second in scratch all-events (2,067) and Josh Schmehl of Medical Lake fifth (1,946).

Captain Morgan’s Crew of Pullman led in handicap team (3,500) while Summit Valley Wrecking Crew from Nine Mile Falls was third (3,409).

“Area competitors, led by Andrea Smith of Republic, held 16 top-five positions after the fourth of nine weeks in the Washington State Women’s Tournament in Mt. Vernon.

Smith leads in Class G scratch all-events (1,456), is third in G scratch singles (506), fifth in F scratch doubles with Gina Graham (862) and their Republic News Miner team leads the five-woman team scratch E division with a 2,303.

Other area bowlers in the top five:

Out-of-Towners, Newport, fifth, five-woman team B scratch division (2,415); Latah Realty, Moscow, Idaho, fifth, four-woman team C scratch (1,846); and North Idaho Crushing II, St. Maries, second four-woman team E scratch (1,836).

Donna Bailey-Lynda Benjamin, Newport, second B scratch doubles (1,091); Melissa Singer-Candee Singer, Davenport, and Connie Hanley-Tina Banderob, St. Maries, tied for second, E scratch doubles (929).

Judy Balzer, Spokane, second D scratch singles (587); Candee Singer, fifth D scratch all-events (1,534); Banderob, second F scratch all-events (1,426); Rachel Lawson, Republic, fourth F scratch all-events (1,418); Debbie Miller, Davenport, third G scratch all-events (1,362) and Christina Adams, Republic, fourth G scratch all-events (1,362).

College scene

Sasha Polishchuk, who just completed her sophomore season on the Gonzaga women’s basketball team, will play for the Ukrainian Junior National team in the U20 European Championships July 13-17 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

“I’m extremely excited for Sasha,” said GU coach Kelly Graves. “This will be a great experience for her.”

Polishchuk averaged 3.4 points, 2.2 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 31 games for the Bulldogs this past season.

Greg Spurgetis of Spokane, an All-Greater Spokane League selection as a senior at Lewis and Clark in 2004, shared the Naseby Rhinehart Award (most inspirational player) for the Montana men’s basketball team.

Spurgetis is a 6-foot-4 sophomore who played in nine games for the Grizzlies this past season.

Cross country

Rachel Fridye of University has signed a letter of intent with the University of Alaska in Fairbanks.

A four-year member of U-Hi cross country and track teams, Fridye will forego her track career when she joins the Nanooks because the school does not have a track program. Her best time in a 5K race was 19 minutes, 10 seconds.

Football

Tyler Sanders of Lake City in Coeur d’Alene, an All-North Idaho selection at wide receiver by The Spokesman-Review last fall, has signed a letter of intent with Carroll College in Helena, Saints coach Mike Van Diest announced.

Soccer

Alex Butler of Spokane, a defender who played her first two years at Washington State, has transferred to Seattle Pacific, the Falcons announced.

Butler, the Greater Spokane League MVP as a junior and senior at G-Prep, missed all but two games her freshman season at WSU with an ankle injury and played in just nine games last season.

Softball

Heather Jackson, a shortstop at Shadle Park, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Community Colleges of Spokane next year, Sasquatch coach Janet Skaife announced.

As a junior at Shadle, Jackson batted .442 and did not commit an error in earning second-team All-Greater Spokane League. This season she is hitting .423, hitting safely in all but one game.

Track and field

George Mathews of Hayden Lake won four events in the annual Seattle Masters A.C. Spring Fling last weekend in the 60-64 age division.

In the 44-pound super weight, Mathews set an American outdoor record with a throw of 33 feet, 10 1/4 inches. Last month in Boston, he set an American indoor record of 34-1 1/2.

Mathews also won the 5K hammer (164-3), the 20-pound weight (64-6) and the shot put (40-3 1/2).

Volleyball

Kayla Mainer, a former three-sport star at West Valley, will transfer from North Idaho College to Western Oregon University to join the coach who recruited her out of high school.

Mainer, a first-team All-Greater Spokane League selection as a senior at WV and a 3A All-State honorable mention, was recruited by WOU coach Joe Houck when he was associate head coach at Eastern Washington. He’s been at WOU for two seasons.

After a redshirt year at EWU, Mainer transferred to NIC and helped the Cardinals to a fourth-place finish at the NJCAA Division I tournament last season.

Miscellany

The North Idaho College Booster Club spring auction and athletic awards banquet will be at 5 p.m. May 5 at the Shriner’s Club, 1250 W. Lancaster Road in Hayden.

Tickets are $25 each or $175 for a table of eight.

Awards will be given to the female and male student-athletes of the year and outstanding scholars. A team of the year award will also be presented.

The booster club member of the year will be acknowledged.

Proceeds from the auction and banquet benefit the NIC athletics department.
