Hughes will attend Harvard

Olympic figure skater Emily Hughes is headed for Harvard.

And she’ll keep competing, too.

The U.S. silver medalist and sister of 2002 Olympic champion Sarah Hughes said Thursday she will attend Harvard University in the fall as a full-time student. While at school, she will train under coaches Mark Mitchell and Peter Johansson at the Skating Club of Boston.

MJ’s son headed for Illinois

Jeffrey Jordan, the son of Michael Jordan, plans to attend Illinois next year and play basketball as a walk-on.

Jordan, a 6-2 guard at Loyola Academy prep school in Wilmette, Ill., said he chose Illinois over Valparaiso.

“After I worked out at Illinois, (met) with the coaching staff and the players, and toured the campus with my mom, I just felt more comfortable with U of I,” he said.

The 18-year-old Jordan was a three-year starter at Loyola Academy and two-year All Catholic League player.

Barbaro will be remembered

The fans who prayed daily for Barbaro and sent online messages of support never were able to get together to celebrate his recovery. Today those fans will put away their keyboards to meet and honor his memory.

The Kentucky Derby-winning colt became a symbol of courage before he was euthanized in January. Now, fans from around the world who sent cards, roses and fruit baskets finally will pay tribute to him today on what would have been the horse’s fourth birthday.

Fan Sharon Crumb organized the “Celebration of Barbaro’s Life” at Delaware Park, where Barbaro won his maiden race on Oct. 4, 2005. She’ll have some company. More than 500 FOBs – that’s Internet message board lingo for Fans of Barbaro – have committed to attend a day of racing, share stories and pay respects.

Jackson punches self out of opener

WNBA player Deanna Jackson was arrested on an assault charge after slugging an opposing player in a parking lot following a game, and will not be allowed to leave Israel until after the Chicago Sky’s preseason opener.

Jackson will have to stay in Israel until at least May 3, when she will appear in court.

Jackson spent this winter playing for Anda Ramat Hasharon of the Israeli league.

She was arrested Wednesday night after attacking Ina Gourevitch, an Elitzur Ramle guard, following the league title game.
