Sculpture will be dedicated

“Reflections,” a public art piece honoring “the creative spirit” of the late Patrick Flammia, is being dedicated on Saturday at 5 p.m. on the North Idaho College campus near the Art on the Green Juried Show.

Flammia, a popular Coeur d’Alene artist and one of the founders of Art on the Green, died a little more than a year ago.

“This is not a memorial to Pat in any way,” says his widow, Sue Flammia.

“He was very adamant about ‘no funeral, no memorials.’ “

His friends, however, wanted to do something and thought it would be appropriate to honor him through a piece of public art.

“Pat was so great for so many of us,” says artist Harold Balazs of Spokane, who was friends with Flammia for more than 50 years.

“We made artsy-craftsy things together for a couple of years back in the early ‘50s,” recalls Balazs. “Back then we were just trying to keep life and limb together.”

Balazs and Allen Dodge of Coeur d’Alene designed and created a large interactive stainless steel, iron and wood sculpture.

“It is our hope that this will be the first in a series of public art works on the North Idaho College campus,” says Sue Flammia.
