Former University of Washington men’s golfer Alex Prugh (Ferris High) finished second at the Western Amateur Championship Monday at Point O’Woods Golf and Country Club in Benton Harbor, Mich.

Prugh finished second in the stroke-play portion of the tournament on Friday, finishing one shot short of medalist honors with an 8-under 272 overall. His 5-under 65 in the opening round had him tied for an early lead in the tournament before shooting rounds of even-par 70, 2-under 68 and 1-under 69.

In match play, Prugh recorded three straight wins before falling to Jhared Hack in the final. He defeated Stanford’s Matthew Savage in the first round, Clemson’s Kyle Stanley in the quarterfinals on Saturday before beating Rob Grube, also of Stanford, in Sunday’s semifinals.

Lakeside Gray of Bellevue will meet defending state champion Richland today at 11 a.m. at University for a chance to dethrone the defending champs in the legion State AA championship game.

Richland defeated University 11-2 in the first semifinal on Monday to reach the title game. A five-hit, five-run first inning for Richland, propelled by a three-run bomb from Brett Jacobs, was enough to secure the victory over University, which finished the season 38-5.

Lakeside Gray knocked off River Ridge in a five-inning 18-4 rout in the other semifinal.
