University wins state Legion title

Tournament MVP Ian Craig-Scott’s two-run double drove in the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning and he pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the win as University captured the Junior A American Legion State Baseball Championship with a 6-5 victory over North Thurston in Mount Vernon, Wash., Wednesday.

University defeated Central Valley 4-0 earlier in the day to reach the title game as Cody Canaday pitched five innings of two-hit ball to get the win while Craig-Scott went the final two innings. Tyler Hickman had two RBIs on sacrifice flies.

University went 5-1 in the tournament, losing only to North Thurston Sunday. Central Valley handed North Thurston its other tourney loss, 4-3 on Tuesday.

The victory completed University’s season at 33-8-1 for the team made up of players 14 to 16 years old.

The team is coached by Josh Nichols and assistant Kenny VanSickle.

Team members are: Destry Groom, Ian Craig-Scott, Tyler Hickman, Landon Elliott, Cody Canaday, John Schmedding, Justin Liu, Kramer Lavoie, Justin Groom, Adam Jessup, Nick Kim, Josh Berdar, Adam Roskamp, Drew Daly, Jamie Higley, Garrett Simpson, Anthony Kuipers and Krys Haas.

•The Spokane Bandits were eliminated by Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak 9-4 in the semifinals of the Senior American Legion State Tournament at Yakima. Billy Moon and Danny Jordan had three hits each for Spokane.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga senior forward George Josten is one of 29 players selected for the Hermann Trophy watch list.

The Hermann award, sponsored by the Missouri Athletic Club, honors the country’s top collegiate male and female soccer players. Josten has led the West Coast Conference in scoring the last two seasons.

Josten’s Bulldogs have been chosen sixth out of seven teams in the WCC preseason coaches’ poll.

Santa Clara is picked to win, followed by San Francisco, San Diego, Loyola Marymount and Portland (tied), GU and Saint Mary’s.
