Area roundup: Eagles fill out roster

The Spokesman-Review

New Eastern Washington University men’s basketball coach Kirk Earlywine filled his roster for the upcoming season with four junior college recruits, including former Cheney standout Matt Brunell, the school announced on Tuesday.

Brunell, a forward, previously played at Big Bend Community College. He will be joined by guard Adris DeLeon (College of Southern Idaho), guard Milan Stanojevic (Northwest College in Wyoming) and guard Gary Gibson (Miami Dade College).

“The University of Idaho men’s team will open the season at home against Cascade College on Nov. 9. The Vandals will also host non-conference games against Eastern Washington and Idaho State and hit the road to play Gonzaga, Washington State, Arizona State and UC Riverside.

Women’s soccer

The Washington State Cougars were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll of Pacific-10 Conference coaches.

UCLA was picked to finish first.

Golf

The new golf course at Washington State University will use too much water, say environmentalists who are asking the state to prevent the course from opening.

The 18-hole Palouse Ridge Golf Club, scheduled to open this fall, could require more than 100 million gallons of water per year in an area where water is already scarce and the aquifer level is dropping, according to the Center for Environmental Law & Policy.
