Achievements: Area Boy Scouts attain Eagle rank

The following three local members of Troop 13 recently were awarded the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank awarded to Boy Scouts.

Nathaniel Johnson of Spokane is the son of Garth and Kuulei Johnson of Spokane and is a recent graduate of Mead High School. For his project, he designed, constructed, and installed roadside reader boards to indicate fire danger level at two district fire stations.

John Lahtinen of Mead is the son of Duncan and Jane Lahtinen of Mead and will attend Mt. Spokane High School this fall. For his project, Lahtinen accumulated over 120 service hours by organizing volunteers to remove horse corrals and barbed wire fencing at Riverside State Park. Volunteers cleaned up the area, trimming back trees and brush.

Jordan Larson of Spokane will be a senior at Mt. Spokane High School and is the son of Larry and Dawn Larson of Spokane. For his project he organized a blood drive for the Inland Northwest Blood Bank.

Eric Vandenburg of Spokane and a member of Troop 117, was awarded the Boy Scout’s rank of Eagle Scout recently. He is a recent graduate of Northwest Christian School and is the son of Larry and Paula Vandenburg of Spokane. For his project, Vandenburg planted native trees and bushes to restore the stream that flows through the Northwest Christian School campus.

“ The following students were awarded scholarships from Eastern Washington University for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Bryce Woodworth of Colbert was awarded the Yarwood Honors scholarship. He is the son of Roger and Teresa Woodworth of Colbert and graduated from Mt. Spokane High School in 2003.

Tammy Bertsch of Spokane was awarded a $3,000 Rural American scholarship and a $1,000 Alumni scholarship. She is a 1978 Shadle Park High School graduate and the daughter of James and Frances Bauer of Spokane.

Krista Morrow of Spokane was awarded a $1,500 Wittenbach scholarship. She is the daughter of Mark and Judy Morrow of Nine Mile Falls and is a 2003 graduate of Lakeside High School.

Christopher Haskell of Spokane was awarded a $3,000 Academic Honors scholarship. He recently graduated from Gonzaga Prep and is the son of Lawrence and Lesley Haskell of Spokane.

Jessica Johnson of Spokane was awarded a $1,000 Alumni scholarship. She graduated from Mead High School in 2005 and is the daughter of Julie Johnson of Spokane.

Andrew Griffith of Spokane graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. He is a 2003 graduate of Gonzaga Prep and the son Barbara Griffith of Spokane.

“Washington State University awarded University Achievement Award scholarships to recent area high school graduates.

Natalie Baydo received a $2,500 award. She graduated from Deer Park High School in June and is the daughter of Robert and Shellie Baydo of Deer Park.

Lauren DeFelice was awarded $2,500. She is the daughter of Arthur and Diana DeFelice of Spokane and graduated from Mt. Spokane High School in June.

Tera Poirier received a $2,500 award. She is the daughter of Carolyn Poirier of Spokane and graduated from North Central High School in June.
