NFL roundup: Quinn has solid outing

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Brady Quinn’s pro debut was nearly picture perfect.

With flashbulbs popping all around the stadium, Quinn threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes in his first NFL exhibition game and looked better than any Cleveland quarterback in the Browns’ 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Saturday night in Cleveland.

The former Notre Dame star, who isn’t expected to begin the season as Cleveland’s starter but could become a late addition to the club’s ongoing competition between Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson, entered with the Browns down 23-7.

Saints 27, Bengals 19: At Cincinnati, Drew Brees led New Orleans to a touchdown in his only series, completing every throw he made in the Saints’ victory over the Bengals.

The Saints scored on their first three drives against Cincinnati’s starting unit.

Cincinnati’s new-look defense looked a lot like the old one, giving up two touchdowns and a field goal on the Saints’ first three possessions.

Texans 33, Cardinals 20: At Glendale, Ariz., Matt Schaub was 9 of 12 for 108 yards and ran 5 yards for a score and Houston went on to beat Arizona in Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt’s home debut.

Matt Leinart went 7 for 7 for 70 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to Edgerrin James for Arizona.

Jaguars 31, Buccaneers 19: At Jacksonville, Fla., Byron Leftwich was 6 of 12 for 81 yards to lead the Jaguars past Tampa Bay.

Jeff Garcia gave the Buccaneers an early lead when he scrambled right and found David Boston in the end zone. Garcia finished 6 of 6 for 43 yards, but he also was sacked once and fumbled a snap in three series.

Chargers 30, Rams 13: At St. Louis, Darren Sproles returned a punt 81 yards for a touchdown and Philip Rivers threw a 5-yard scoring pass to Vincent Jackson to lead San Diego past the Rams.

Two turnovers negated scoring opportunities in the first half for the Rams, with Bulger’s overthrown pass intercepted in the end zone and Madison Hedgecock fumbling after a reception at the Chargers 19.

Steelers 12, Redskins 10: At Landover, Md., the Washington Redskins’ first-string offense finally scored in a preseason game, albeit without the first-string quarterback.

With Jason Campbell on the sidelines with a bruised knee from a scary hit in the first quarter, Todd Collins completed a 7-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd for the game’s only touchdown in the Redskins’ preseason loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cowboys 31, Broncos 20: At Irving, Texas, Tony Romo had another strong outing guiding the Dallas offense, with Marion Barber III running for two touchdowns and Julius Jones also getting one. The Cowboys were up 24-6 at halftime, when both teams turned things over to backups.

Dallas flustered Denver quarterback Jay Cutler into going 7 of 13 for only 58 yards. He failed to convert all five third-down chances, leaving the Broncos to settle for two short field goals.

49ers 26, Raiders 21: At San Francisco, Daunte Culpepper passed for 75 yards and threw touchdown passes to John Madsen and Zack Crockett, but 49ers rookie Thomas Clayton scored on a 1-yard plunge with 47 seconds left in the 49ers’ win over Oakland.

Culpepper went 6 of 8, didn’t throw an interception and scrambled 13 yards for a first down.

Alex Smith played the entire first half for San Francisco, going 8 of 12 for 106 yards and throwing a beautiful 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Delanie Walker.
