Green named starting quarterback for Miami

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Trent Green was tabbed as the Miami Dolphins’ starting quarterback Monday, ending a bit of training camp speculation over who would win the job.

Green beat out Cleo Lemon, said Dolphins coach Cam Cameron – who insisted throughout camp that a real competition was taking place at quarterback and that the 37-year-old veteran wasn’t being handed the starting role.

“We’re at a point where we need to start putting this offense together and the number one thing our offense needs is leadership,” Cameron said. “Trent brings that, but I do believe Cleo’s time is coming and he’s got a lot of room for growth.”

The Dolphins acquired Green from the Kansas City Chiefs in early June for a draft pick, expecting that he would emerge as Miami’s 11th different starting quarterback since Dan Marino retired seven years ago.

Broncos deal Warren

The Denver Broncos found a surprising trade partner to unload defensive tackle Gerard Warren – the rival Oakland Raiders.

The Broncos shipped Warren to the Raiders for an undisclosed 2008 draft pick. Injuries to both big toes last year led to an idle season for Warren.

Quinn still a backup

Brady Quinn’s strong debut wasn’t enough for him to muscle into Cleveland’s quarterback competition yet.

Charlie Frye will start against the Broncos in Cleveland’s third exhibition.

“We’re going to keep working with him and bringing him along,” Browns coach Romeo Crennel said of Quinn. “He showed enough poise and execution in the game to feel good about, but he still needs work.”

Morgan to return

Carolina Panthers middle linebacker Dan Morgan will play on Friday against New England for the first time since suffering at least the fifth concussion of his career.

“It’s been almost a year now since I’ve played in a game, so obviously I’m real excited,” Morgan said.

Morgan, who suffered his first concussion with the Panthers in 2003, had a concussion in Carolina’s season-opening loss to Atlanta last year and sat out the final 15 games.

Lions’ Rogers back

The Detroit Lions activated defensive tackle Shaun Rogers from the physically unable-to-perform list, making one of their best players eligible to practice for the first time this season.

Jaguars sign guard

Guard Tutan Reyes signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who added a veteran following three injuries on their offensive line.

Reyes started six games last season for Buffalo.
