In brief: Roddick boosts record to 6-0 in Davis Cup

Andy Roddick got the United States off to a fast start in the Davis Cup final, beating Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in the first match Friday in Portland.

Roddick had 25 aces in the match, which lasted 1 hour, 53 minutes. Tursunov had eight aces.

Roddick, ranked No. 6 in the world, improved to 6-0 in Davis Cup play this year.

James Blake held off feisty Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 7-6 (3) in the night match to give the United States a 2-0 lead over Russia.

Top-ranked Bob and Mike Bryan face Nikolay Davydenko and Igor Andreev in doubles today.

Football

Osborne stays mum

Nebraska interim athletic director Tom Osborne refused to comment on an ESPN.com report that LSU defensive coordinator Bo Pelini will be introduced as the school’s coach next week.

“Suspended Texas players Andre Jones and James Henry have been indicted on felony charges for their alleged involvement in a July home invasion in Austin.

“Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy received a one-year contract extension after leading the Cowboys to their second straight bowl game.

Perhaps the most memorable point of Gundy’s season came after a 49-45 win against Texas Tech on Sept. 22, when Gundy used his entire postgame news conference to address an Oklahoma City newspaper columnist who was critical of benched quarterback Bobby Reid.

“Bobby Bowden and Florida State are finalizing a deal that would keep him on the Seminoles sideline next year and maybe longer. Bowden’s attorney confirmed that the university and his client have a deal.

Golf

Rose, Immelman lead

Justin Rose shot a 7-under-par 65 to share the lead with Trevor Immelman after the second round of the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.

Rose and Immelman (66) are at 11-under 133, three strokes ahead of Ernie Els at the Gary Player Country Club.

Els is seeking a record fourth title at Sun City but bogeyed the 17th.

Phelps swims to win

Michael Phelps won his first competitive race since breaking a bone in his wrist in October, taking the 200-yard freestyle at the U.S. short course national championships in Atlanta. He later led off the victorious 800 free relay that broke the American and U.S. Open records.

“Michael Walchhofer of Austria edged Steven Nyman by 0.05 seconds to win a World Cup downhill in Beaver Creek, Colo.

Overall World Cup champion Aksel Lund Svindal will remain hospitalized at least another week while he recovers from surgery following a crash during downhill training.

“The University of Pittsburgh brought back Steve Pederson as athletic director. Pederson was Pitt’s athletic director from 1996 to 2002 before leaving to take the same position at Nebraska. He was fired by Nebraska on Oct. 15.
