Pirates advance to final

Ryan Symes scored 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting to guide the Whitworth men’s basketball team to a 73-45 win over Pomona-Pitzer in a semifinal game at the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament Friday at Redlands, Calif.

David Riley tossed in 15 points and Colin Willemsen added seven points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for the Pirates (3-1), who advance to the championship game today at 8 p.m. against host Redlands.

Whitworth held the Sagehens to 33 percent (16 of 48) shooting, including 2 of 15 from 3-point range.

David Brown scored a team-high nine points for Pomona-Pitzer.

The Pirates, making their second appearance in the Lee Fulmer Memorial Tournament, have advanced to the championship game both times. The Pirates won the event in December 2002.

“Humberto Perez scored 17 points and Kene Anusionwu and David Johnson added 12 points apiece to guide North Idaho College to a 81-70 victory over Edmonds at the Scenic West Athletic Conference Challenge in Coeur d’Alene.

Kerry Williams added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Cardinals, who held a 36-29 halftime lead.

Jordan McGinnis had 19 points and seven assists to lead Edmonds.

Also at the Cardinals’ tournament, Snow defeated Green River 86-77. Rene Farias had 20 points and Rory Patterson added 12 points and eight rebounds for Snow.

In another game, Vassy Banny had 19 points and eight rebounds and Brian Green added 17 points and six assists as Salt Lake routed Grant Macewan 106-36. Salt Lake outscored Grant Macewan 48-12 in the second half.

Football

Washington State’s Micah Hannam and Chima Nwachukwu were both named to the Sporting News’ 2007 Pacific-10 Conference All-Freshman Team.

Hannam started all 12 games at right tackle for the Cougars while Nwachukwu, a defensive back, finished sixth on the team with 73 tackles.

“Wide receiver/defensive back Vincent Dancy has been added to the Spokane Shock’s arenafootball2 roster.

Dancy finished his collegiate career at Jackson State University and during his senior year had 66 tackles, two sacks and an interception.

Volleyball

Christal Morrison led five players in double digit kill totals with 27 and Washington defeated Missouri 30-23, 28-30, 30-22, 32-34, 15-11 in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Seattle.

Becky Perry had 21 kills and 11 blocks and Jenna Hagglund dished out 76 assists for the Huskies.

Na Yang had 26 kills and Lei Wang handed out 60 assists to lead the Tigers (17-13).

Washington (27-3) advances to play Brigham Young, which beat Mississippi 3-0, in the second round today at 6 p.m. in Seattle.
