Sun Devils defeat Bulldogs

Jill Noe had 16 points, five assists and five rebounds to lead No. 14 Arizona State past Gonzaga 78-60 Friday night in the first round of the ASU Classic.

Noe hit three 3-pointers, including one during a 13-0 run in the first half that gave Arizona State a 15-point lead. The Sun Devils (4-2) used a 10-0 spurt, started and ended by Noe, to build a 61-42 lead with 12:45 left.

Heather Bowman scored 20 points, all in the second half, and grabbed 11 rebounds for Gonzaga (4-2). The Bulldogs missed 19 of their first 27 shots in falling behind early.

Tennessee transfer Sybil Dosty had a career-high 16 points and added nine rebounds for the Sun Devils, who committed nine turnovers in the first 12 minutes but hit five straight 3-pointers to stretch its lead.

Lauren Lacey, a transfer from Minnesota, added 13 points and five rebounds.

Arizona State will face No. 18 Auburn in the championship game. Auburn beat UC Riverside 64-47.

“Miranda Forry scored 15 points and Kirian Ishizaki, Stephanie Duda and Kelly Cochran added 13 apiece as UC Irvine defeated Eastern Washington 68-57 in a non-conference game at Reese Court in Cheney.

Nicole Scott tallied a game-high 17 points and 13 boards for the Eagles.

Jessica Huntington tied EWU’s season high for assists with nine. The Eagles held a 47-40 advantage in rebounds.

EWU fell to 1-5 while UC Irvine improved to 3-3.

“Jade Peone scored 11 points and Kelsey Stillar and Richelle Daily added 10 apiece to lead CC of Spokane to a 69-43 win over Edmonds at the Everett Classic at Everett Community College.

Liz Beardslee added nine points and four assists for the Sasquatch (3-2), who led 40-22 at the half.

Alexa Breidenbach scored 13 points and Maddison Amos and Kyoko Hirota added 12 apiece to guide the Tritons (0-2).

“Washington freshman Mackenzie Argens will miss the remainder of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, coach Tia Jackson said.

Crystal Langhorne scored 17 points, Marissa Coleman added 14 and No. 3 Maryland beat 19th-ranked Ohio State (5-2) 77-53 in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in College Park, Md.

Laura Harper had 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds, and Kristi Toliver recorded 11 assists to help the Terrapins (10-0) became the first team in the country to reach double figures in victories. Four of those wins have come against ranked opponents.

Langhorne and Harper each had two layups in an 8-2 spurt that increased Maryland’s 14-point halftime advantage to 47-27.

After Ohio State closed to 58-44, Langhorne made a layup, Harper hit a free throw and Marah Strickland scored in the lane to put the Terrapins ahead by 19 with 7:19 to play.

Jantel Lavender had 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Buckeyes. Ohio State went 21 for 71 from the floor (30 percent) and missed 15 of its 21 shots from 3-point range.

Langhorne finished with six rebounds to reach 966 for her career, two short of the school record held by Vicky Bullett. The senior center has 44 points in three starts since returning from a sprained ankle that forced her to miss six of Maryland’s first seven games.

“A very, very convincing win,” Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. “The best thing was just to be able to see how we executed defensively. We went in with a game plan and did a phenomenal job executing it to perfection.”
