Education notebook: DECA competition begins Friday at SCC

The project management class of Spokane Community College will host a Distributive Education Clubs of America competition Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the main building on campus, 1810 N. Greene St.

Students from Coeur d’Alene, Deer Park, Spokane, Riverside and more will have a chance to show off their entrepreneurial skills at the competition which will feature accounting, hotel and lodging management, retail merchandising, business law and ethics, restaurant and food service management, sports and entertainment and more.

The contests are designed to be like real-life work experience, and the students will be rated on content, presentation and solution or response.

Tax levy roll back

Spokane Public Schools will only collect $43.3 million in the voter-approved 2008 levy. Voters approved to pay the district $47 million, but due to tax relief by the state of Washington, the tax burden on property owners will be reduced by $3.6 million.
