Giant Bites need to go back to drawing board

Wed., Dec. 12, 2007

Moms and Dads will try all manner of disguise to get their little ones to eat vegetables. Green Giant’s new Giant Bites probably won’t work either.

Reader Food Panel members fell into roughly two categories after tasting the new breaded-and-baked veggie and sauce bites – those who wanted to like them and those who did not like them one bit. Overall, that meant the corn and butter Giant Bites eked out a two-star rating, while the broccoli and cheese flavor bites got a slightly higher score with two and a half stars.

The innovation was not appreciated by most testers, nor was the texture.

“Breaded broccoli! Will this get the kids to eat it?” wondered Andy Hoye. “Not if they care about texture – this is a mushy disaster.”

Tina Johnson was not impressed either. “This must be the most unhealthy broccoli ever mass produced. I feel sorry for the heroic, noble broccoli that gave its life for this.”

Gabe Kohler and Skip Hubbard found some redeeming qualities. Kohler didn’t like the crunchy outside paired with a gooey middle, but he thought the broccoli flavor was good.

Hubbard thought the bites had potential. “This could be good if only they would use actual cheese. When will manufacturers realize that ingredients do mean something to us common folk?”

Tasters didn’t like the corn-and-butter bites any better. A few praised the snack for the corn flavor and a touch of honey in the crust, but others called them mushy and strange.

“Moist and corny on the inside with crispy outer shell. Not bad, but certainly not good enough to put on the table,” Hubbard said.

“Hopefully they’ll go back to the drawing board before people mistakenly buy these,” Larry Inman said.

Comments: “Southern transplants may like these. Fried corn balls must appeal to someone.” – Tina Johnson

“I like the taste of these. It’s sweet and there is a slight hint of honey. On the other hand the texture is too gooey and the corn tastes very fake.” – Gabe Kohler

“Normal corn flavor is masked by mushy filler and bland bread coating … pass on this one.” – Andy Hoye
