The Arc of Spokane is looking for people or organizations that deserve to be recognized for their support of people who have an intellectual or developmental disability.

They will be honored at The Arc’s annual meeting on March 18. Nominees need not have an affiliation with The Arc to be considered.

Award categories include The Hazel Skog Award, The Good Neighbor Award, Advocate of the Year, Self-Advocate of the Year, Educator of the Year, Employer of the Year, Media Person of the Year and Organization of the Year.

East Central

Free baseball clinic for kids offered

A free baseball clinic for children age 7-10 will be offered next Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at East Central Community Center. The fundamentals of hitting, throwing and fielding will be taught.

Used youth-size baseball gloves are needed to give to participants. Please donate to help kids who want to play but cannot afford to buy a new mitt.

The clinic is sponsored by a grant from GSSAC and West Central and East Central Community Centers. Contact Rick at 323-7501 for registration information.

SPOKANE VALLEY

Signup under way for theater classes

Christian Youth Theater is accepting registration for theater arts classes that begin the week of Jan. 7 in Spokane Valley. Classes are for youth ages 6-18 and run 10 weeks.

At the end of the session there will be a showcase for friends and family to show off what the children have learned. Classes include accents and dialect, stage fighting, hip-hop, core acting, singing and dancing and Salute to Disney.

All students enrolled in a class are eligible to audition for “A Little Mermaid” which runs Feb. 22 to March 1 at the Bing Crosby Theatre.

SPOKANE COUNTY

SCRAPS will be closed Monday

The Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service will be closed Monday, as a result of President Bush’s executive order regarding government office closures on Christmas Eve,

Cindy Taskila, SCRAPS shelter officer, said many “lovely, happy adolescent and adult dogs and cats” are available through Saturday.

“We send our very young puppies and kittens to Spokane Humane Society, as they can offer a quiet and warm environment for young animals,” says Nancy Hill, SCRAPS director.

SCRAPS, 2521 N. Flora Road, is open for adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and Friday, noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 477-2532.
