In brief: Nursing student gets scholarship

North Idaho College associate’s degree nursing student James Zoshak of Rathdrum recently received a competitive state nursing scholarship. The $1,000 Florence Whipple Scholarship Award was presented to Zoshak through the Idaho Nurses Association.

Zoshak is a second-year nursing student at NIC. He is president of the NIC chapter of the Idaho Student Nursing Association as well as the state organization.

The Florence Whipple Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 as a memorial to Whipple, who was known for her personal and professional quest for knowledge of better ways to meet the health needs of the people. A registered nurse, Whipple was active in the Idaho Nurses Association and was director of Public Health Nursing of the Idaho Board of Health in the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Police focusing on impaired drivers

Post Falls police are teaming with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other law enforcement agencies in a nationwide Impaired Driving Emphasis through Jan. 2.

Officers will target impaired drivers in an effort to reduce alcohol and drug-related collisions. .

There were 110 people killed in Idaho in impaired driving crashes in 2006, up from 100 in 2005, said police, who offered these facts about impaired drivers:

“An additional 316 people were critically injured in impaired driving crashes in 2006, down from 367 in 2005.

“Impaired driving crashes are just 8 percent of Idaho’s crashes but result in 41 percent of traffic fatalities.

“Of the motor vehicle occupants killed in impaired driving crashes, 69 percent were not wearing seat belts.

The Post Falls Police Department wishes everyone a happy holiday season. Do your part in keeping our roadways safe by reporting any possibly impaired drivers.

Jan 1. run to benefit TESH

Those looking for a great way to start their new year still have time to sign up for the 31st annual Hangover Handicap on Jan. 1.

The 5-mile fun run is an event for the whole family. The run begins at 9:30 a.m., behind Michael D’s restaurant at 203 Coeur d’Alene Lake Drive.

Proceeds benefit TESH Inc., a nonprofit organization whose mission is to teach life and job skills to those with disabilities.
