State migrant council fires longtime leader

The longtime head of the Washington State Migrant Council was fired for excessive absenteeism and tardiness, insubordination and unsatisfactory performance, according to a memo written by the council’s board chairman.

Carlos Diaz, 63, maintains he was the victim of a hostile takeover by the chairman and the council’s chief financial officer, now the interim chief executive.

The $30 million-a-year nonprofit agency runs a network of Head Start and early childhood education centers for children of low-income families and migrant and seasonal farm workers.

The council’s nine-member board of directors voted unanimously Saturday to remove Diaz and replace him temporarily with Luana Lumley, who will also remain chief financial officer while a permanent replacement is sought.

Neither Lumley nor council board Chairman Rodolfo Mendoza would say what led to the firing, citing confidentiality concerns.
