Forecasters see more heavy snow

Sliding cars and jackknifed trucks snarled highway traffic, and flights were grounded Tuesday as a storm blew out of the Midwest with a threat of up to 2 feet of blowing, drifting snow.

The National Weather Service posted winter storm watches and warnings from Iowa and Missouri across the Ohio Valley into parts of New England.

Up to 18 inches of snow was forecast for northern Pennsylvania, with a chance of 2 feet at higher elevations. Twenty-inch accumulations were possible in parts of New York state, where communities on the eastern end of Lake Ontario have endured a week of lake-effect snow that totaled more than 11 feet.

Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport canceled more than 900 flights, airport and airline officials said.

American jailed for beating Afghan

The first American civilian to be charged with mistreating a detainee during wars after by the Sept. 11 attacks was sentenced Tuesday to nearly 8 1/2 years in prison for beating a man in Afghanistan who later died.

Former CIA contract employee David Passaro, 40, was accused of hitting Afghan detainee Abdul Wali with a flashlight and kicking him in the groin during a two-day interrogation at a remote military base in July 2003. Wali died within 48 hours of the interrogation, after complaining of abdominal pain and an inability to urinate.

U.S. District Judge Terrence Boyle has said that the absence of an autopsy probably kept Passaro from being charged with murder.

Scalia’s daughter suspected of DUI

A daughter of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was arrested Monday night in Wheaton, Ill., and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and child endangerment, Wheaton Deputy Police Chief Thomas Meloni said.

Ann S. Banaszewski, 45, was stopped about 7:25 p.m. in a 1996 Ford Econoline van after a citizen reported a possible drunken driver was at the McDonald’s restaurant near there, Meloni said.

Three of Banaszewski’s “small children” were in the van with her at the time, leading to the child endangerment charge, Meloni said.

Girl, 5, found days after mom’s death

A 5-year-old girl fended for herself for days while home alone with the body of her mother, who apparently succumbed to bacterial meningitis, authorities said.

Police forced their way into the rural home about 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids on Sunday and found the cupboards open, rice and cereal spilled all over, and the bathroom sink overflowing.

The body of Tina Tietz, 39, was on the couch in the living room. Her daughter Marissa had rummaged the house for food for an unknown number of days. The family dog was tied up inside.

Marissa was examined at a hospital and is in the temporary custody of the state human services department.
