Numerous Ash Wednesday services offered

Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent for Christians, the period of 40 days of reflection and preparation before Easter. Many Valley churches will be having special worship services on Wednesday to observe the day.

• The Veradale United Church of Christ will host two services Wednesday, each preceded by a meal. A service will begin at 12:30 p.m. with lunch preceeding at 11:30 a.m. The second service is at 7:30 p.m. with a soup supper preceeding at 6:30. The church is at 611 N. Progress Road.

• Opportunity Presbyterian Church, 202 N. Pines Road, will have a service at 7 p.m. Wednesday. It will be preceded by a soup supper at 6.

• An Ash Wednesday service will begin at 7 p.m. at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church, 115 N. Raymond Road.

• Peace Lutheran Church, 4124 N. Harvard Road, will begin its worship service at 7 p.m.

• Zion Lutheran Church, 8304 E. Buckeye, will serve a soup supper at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. An Ash Wednesday service will follow at 7:10.

• There will be a soup supper at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, followed by a worship service at 7. The church is at 810 S. Sullivan Road.

• Opportunity Christian Church will celebrate before Lent begins with a Fat Tuesday pancake feed and carnival from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. An Ash Wednesday service will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The church is at 708 N. Pines Road.

• The Episcopal Church of the Resurrection will also host a pancake supper Tuesday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. There will be two Ash Wednesday services, one at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and another at 7 p.m. The church is at 15319 E. Eighth Ave.

• Christ Lutheran Church, 13009 E. Broadway, will have an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m.

Symphony in the Valley

The Spokane Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Spokane Valley Church of the Nazarene. The concert will feature music by American composers. The cost is $7 in advance or $10 at the door. A family of up to five members is $20.

Spaghetti dinner

St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church will host its annual spaghetti dinner Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the church, 503 N. Walnut Road. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12 and seniors over 60. Children 5 and under are free.
