Stuckey making noise in summer league

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

Former Eastern Washington University All-American Rodney Stuckey scored 27 points, including a key three-point play with 48 seconds left in the game to lead the Detroit Pistons to an 80-78 victory over Memphis in NBA Summer League play at Las Vegas.

Stuckey scored 14 points in his pro debut on Saturday in a 91-89 win over Philadelphia. The 6-foot-5 guard was the 15th selection overall in last month’s NBA draft after playing two seasons at EWU.

Stuckey made 9 of 16 shots from the field and all nine of his free throws in the win over the Grizzlies. He also had a pair of steals, two assists and three rebounds.

In two games thus far, he is shooting 52 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line. His next NBA Summer League game is Wednesday against the Washington Wizards.

Iverson loses court case

A federal jury awarded $260,000 to one of two men who sued NBA star Allen Iverson after they said they were beaten by his entourage at a Washington nightclub in 2005.

The jury’s decision against Iverson and his bodyguard, Jason Kane, covers bar patron Marlin Godfrey’s medical bills and pain and suffering. But the jury chose not to award punitive damages, which could have significantly raised the damage award.

Godfrey and another patron, David Anthony Kittrell, sued the Denver Nuggets guard for $20 million, saying they were beaten by his entourage in July 2005. The attacks, they said, followed their refusal to vacate the Eyebar club’s VIP section for Iverson.

Hawks sign Horford, Law

The Atlanta Hawks signed first-round draft picks Al Horford and Acie Law to multi-year contracts, clearing the way for the two to play in the summer league this month in Salt Lake City.

Horford, the No. 3 overall pick, is expected to play forward and center for the Hawks. Horford (6-10, 245) was a three-year starter at Florida.

Law, the No. 11 pick, is expected to compete for a starting job at point guard. Law averaged 18.1 points for Texas A&M as a senior.

Financial terms of the contracts were not immediately available.

Mavericks keep George

After opting out of his contract and looking for a better deal elsewhere, swingman Devean George is coming back to the Dallas Mavericks.

George has agreed to a roughly $2.4 million, one-year deal that keeps him as a reserve on one of the top teams in the NBA.

Nets sign Williams

First-round draft pick Sean Williams has signed with the New Jersey Nets.

As the 17th pick, Williams will earn $1,180,500 his rookie year and $1,269,100 his second year.
