In brief: Spokane Valley Fire name now official

The Valley’s fire department had formally changed its name to what most people have been calling it for decades.

Spokane County Fire District 1 is now known officially as the Spokane Valley Fire Department after fire commissioners and county commissioners approved the change.

Fire Commissioner Monte Nesbitt said people have been using the Spokane Valley Fire name since he joined the department in the late 1960s.

“It’s just been that way forever,” he said.

But filling out paperwork had become cumbersome when administrators had to fit both names on a form or were asked what the department should legally be called.

A resolution in 1997 allowed the department to go by either name, but the fire commissioners took out the reference to the fire district last month and received the county commissioners’ approval to do so June 19.

The department’s boundaries, taxing authority, administration and independence from local cities remain unchanged.

Burglar strikes Old European

Someone broke into the Old European Restaurant on East Sprague Avenue overnight Tuesday and took money from the firm’s cash register, said Spokane Valley Police spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.

Officer Jim Ebel was called to the business at 11520 E. Sprague Ave. about 6:15 a.m. Wednesday. The owner said that he arrived about 5 a.m. and discovered the back door open and a large rear window smashed out.

The cash register was missing from the front checkout, and his locked office door had been forced open. The office had been ransacked and a small amount of change stolen.

Anyone with information regarding the break-in is encouraged to call the Spokane Valley Police at 242-TIPS.
