Locally: Gonzaga’s Loe earns golf honors

Gonzaga University’s Trevor Loe, a senior-to-be on the men’s golf team, became the second Bulldog to be named a Cleveland All-American Scholar by the golf coaches.

Loe, who holds a 3.74 grade point average, was also named to the ESPN the Magazine District 8 All-Academic second team.

Matt Munroe earned Cleveland Golf All-American Scholar status for Gonzaga in 2005.

To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must be a junior or senior, compete in 70 percent of his team’s competitive rounds, have a stroke average less than 76 in Division I and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2.

College scene

Whitworth’s Ben Spaun has been named to the Men’s 2007 ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America Track & Field/Cross Country Third Team.

Spaun held a 3.99 GPA and won Northwest Conference titles in the 110-meter high hurdles and the 400 hurdles.In addition, Spaun was joined by four other Pirates on the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team.

Whitworth’s Kristen Dormaier, Brandon Howell, Cody Stelzer and Jeff Kintner also made the academic team.

“Six area women’s golfers have been named to the NCAA Division I National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team.

Gonzaga’s Jennifer Swanson, Lauren Phillips and Sarah Sheffield, Eastern Washington’s Marli Mikulecky, Washington State’s Diana Hong and Idaho’s Amanda Jacobs were selected to the team.

To make the team, student-athletes must hold a 3.5 GPA or higher and compete in at least 50 percent of their school’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

“Six University of Idaho track and field athletes have been named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Team while the women’s team was honored as a Division I All-Academic Team.

The Vandals women carried a 3.1 team GPA to earn the team honor, which is based on both athletic and academic success.

Allix Lee-Painter, Bevin Kennelly, Christie Gordon, K.C. Dahlgren, Melinda Owen and James Rogan were all selected to the team.

Awards

Mick Holien, who attended Gonzaga Prep High School and Eastern Washington University, received the 2007 E.B. Craney award as the outstanding radio sports broadcaster in Montana.

Holien is beginning his 23rd year of broadcasting University of Montana sports.

Football

Senior linebacker David Vobora and junior center Adam Korby were selected as captains by the University of Idaho football team.

Softball

Mt. Spokane outfielder Andrea Hacker has signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa Lakes Community College and play for the softball team.

Tennis

The North Park Racquet Club of Spokane lost 2-1 in the championship game, finishing second in the men’s 3.0 division at the Pacific Northwest Super Senior USTA Section Championships June 26 in Sunriver, Ore.

Miscellany

The second annual Dan Dickau Celebrity Poker Tournament will be held Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. at Northern Quest Casino.

The 2007 Toyota All-American’s Charity Classic will be held the following day at Gonzaga’s McCarthey Center.
