Big bucks to Spokane nursing school

The new nursing school on the Washington State University Riverpoint Campus has received $1.5 million in federal funding to create the Inland Northwest Human Simulation Lab. The lab is part of the nursing building currently under construction.

Says a news release, the human patient simulation lab “uses life-sized mannequins that actually breathe, have bowel sounds, lung sounds, pulses and a heart beat. All HPS life signs and sounds, including patient speech, are controlled by a technician at a computer, simulating different disease processes, varying vital signs and deterioration or improvement in patient states.”

And, really, wouldn’t you want a student practicing on a robotic patient rather than a decidedly unrobotic you?

Author will share ‘feel-great foods’

If you’re interested in how what you eat affects your athletic performance, you may want to mark your calendar.

Sports nutrition expert Susan Kleiner will be at REI, 1125 N. Monroe St. in Spokane, from noon-1 p.m. on Friday.

Kleiner is the author of “The Good Mood Diet,” which includes a list of “feel-great foods.”

In Spokane, she’ll sign copies of her book and will answer sports nutrition questions.

Here are the top 10 peak performance tips from the Mercer Island-based author:

1. Think about what you need to eat, not what you can’t eat. 2. Always combine starches with protein and/or healthy fat. 3. Eat before and after exercise, and every 2 1/2 to 3 hours during the day. 4. Have three servings of dairy each day. 5. Have egg yolk or soy each day. 6. Have nuts each day. 7. Eat fish five times a week. 8. Drink 5-6 cups of water each day. 9. Eat a variety of vegetables. 10. Eat a variety of fruits, particularly citrus and berries, every day.
