Casto confirms move

Ferris basketball player DeAngelo Casto verified Tuesday that he intends to move with family to Seattle later this summer and that it is about more than basketball.

“A lot of people say I want to be on the best team in state. If I want to be on the best team I’d stay here,” Casto said. “My mom’s moving and I want to be with family.”

He said he will enroll at Franklin.

Last weekend Casto played with Franklin in its Quaker Classic summer tournament. The team finished second to Rainier Beach, he added.

“They accepted me a lot,” he said. “It was nice – different, but nice.”

Casto, a 6-foot-8 junior, transferred to Ferris from Freeman midway through his sophomore year and had an immediate effect this year, his initial season as a Saxon.

He was the unbeaten state-champion Saxons’ scoring and rebounding leader, averaging 15.4 points per game in 29 games.

Included were 16.9 and 10.3 scoring and rebounding averages in the state tournament last March in Tacoma.

His high profile made him a lightning rod for bloggers both pro and con.

Casto admitted he read what was written and was bothered by it, saying they have too much time on their hands.

“A lot of time it’s not the truth,” he said. “It’s kind of pathetic what they do. People don’t want you to succeed, but you have to accept it.”

He said that college is ultimately in his plans, but he still must take his SAT.
