Help wanted: High school journalists for the Vox

From Staff Reports The Spokesman-Review

The Vox, a student-produced newspaper published by The Spokesman-Review, is hiring staff for the 2007-08 school year. This year the Vox plans to extend distribution to Idaho.

Any teenager in Spokane County and North Idaho is eligible to apply. Chosen students will receive journalism training as they learn how to produce a professional-quality newspaper distributed to high schools and throughout the region.

Contributors work out of The Spokesman-Review newsroom and have the opportunity to build a portfolio of clips while working with professionals. Students can also enroll in an online course through Spokane Public Schools and receive scholastic credit.

No journalism experience is required. Participation is competitive, and students must complete an application process. Students need one year of experience with the Vox to be eligible for editor positions.

“Working at the Vox was a great learning experience for me. It’s so much fun being able to work with professionals at The Spokesman-Review while you learn the basics of journalism,” Vox copy chief Maggie Capwell said.

The Vox is seeking writers who can cover news, sports, opinion and entertainment, and the newspaper plans to expand its photography staff. Also needed are page designers and graphic artists familiar with Photoshop.

“As the Vox continues to develop, we want to ensure that as much content as possible is student-produced,” said next year’s Vox editor, Tori Dykes. “The addition of a graphic designer or artist would be invaluable in achieving this goal.”

This year the Vox had an exchange student writing a regular column about her home in Jordan and her experiences in the United States.

The Vox would like to have another exchange student write similar pieces this school year. The Vox also wants to find a political cartoonist.

Students selected will be expected to complete some training this summer at the S-R newsroom, and will have to make occasional trips to Spokane throughout the school year for staff meetings.

Applications are due June 22.
