Naked Liberty Lake man arrested

A Liberty Lake accountant plowed his Honda Odyssey minivan through lawns and into garages and a parked car before being arrested naked at gunpoint in his neighbor’s yard Friday, police said.

Jon J. Dawn, 29, left his house at 24216 E. Cataldo Court about 3:30 a.m., rammed his van into two garage doors and a Mercedes in his cul-de-sac, then cut through two yards and a fairly deep storm swale before crashing into a fence a couple blocks away, witnesses and police said.

The clamor, as well as a man’s screams, prompted a string of 911 calls.

The two Liberty Lake police officers on duty and five sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene, said Liberty Lake Police Chief Brian Asmus.

As officers were talking to witnesses, Asmus said, they saw Dawn running naked back toward his house and arrested him with weapons drawn.

“He was a little incoherent. He was making some strange statements that weren’t making much sense, then a very short time later he came around and was very coherent” and asked what had happened, Asmus said.

Officers did not suspect that Dawn was using drugs or alcohol, he said.

Paramedics from Valley Fire were called to check on the suspect, who refused medical treatment, said department spokesman Bill Clifford.

Dawn was taken to the county jail and booked on suspicion of first- and second-degree malicious mischief, as well as domestic violence because he had broken a window and damaged some other things in his home, Asmus said.

By Friday afternoon, police were estimating the damage at between $4,000 and $5,000.

“It happened pretty quick, and the good thing is nobody ended up getting hurt,” he said.

While children played inside, no one answered the door at his three-bedroom house Friday.

Neighbors with damaged property in the cul-de-sac said they had agreed with his family not to talk to reporters.

“Honestly, we don’t want you walking through the neighborhood,” said one woman standing in a yard at the southeast corner of Cataldo and Simpson Road.

Without identifying themselves, others said Dawn had never caused any problems before.

On nearby blocks, other neighbors also refused to speak on the record but described sights and sounds that matched the account from police.

Other than bent garage doors and tire tracks through the grass, the subdivision appeared calm and well-kept.

A few homeowners were busy preparing for the communitywide yard sale taking place today.

Dawn, who has had speeding tickets, has no criminal history in Spokane County.

First-degree malicious mischief is a felony, and Washington sentencing guidelines for first offenders range from community service to 90 days in jail.
