The Spokesman-Review

Arlington and Orchard Prairie elementary schools each received a $500 grant from Subway to be used to purchase fitness equipment after their Fit For Bloomsday programs were recognized as two of the best in the region.

The checks were to be presented at awards assemblies Tuesday.

“Arlington and Orchard Prairie really have outstanding Fit For Bloomsday programs,” said Don Kardong, Bloomsday race director.

Arlington and Orchard Prairie were selected to receive the grants by a panel of judges. The program was developed by Bloomsday volunteers in cooperation with physical education instructors, coaches and parents in the Spokane area.

Now in its 21st year, the program prepares kids to run or walk Bloomsday while teaching them the importance of fitness, nutrition and safety.

A record 85 Inland Northwest schools representing nearly 6,000 students participated this year.
