In brief: Warehouse makes historic register

The Spokesman-Review

A small warehouse on the east side of downtown Spokane was voted onto the Spokane Register of Historic Places on Monday by the City Council.

The Dowling & Cattle Warehouse, 117 W. Pacific Ave., was placed on the register because it is part of a larger group of aging commercial warehouses downtown.

RenCorp LLC is converting the 1911 warehouse into commercial spaces for urban design and marketing firms, said Gary Lauerman, architect for RenCorp.

He said renovation is part of an ongoing revitalization of the aging commercial area at Pacific Avenue and Browne Street.

The council approved the listing on a 6-1 vote with Councilman Bob Apple voting no because, he said, the warehouse did not retain sufficient historic integrity.

In another listing, the council approved the Renstrom-Leigh House at 1115 W. 10th Ave. to the city’s historic register in a vote on June 4. The 1895 house is considered a strong example of Queen Anne architecture of the period with additional influence from the Free Classic and Spindlework styles.
