Religion notebook: Mentors sought for young, single mothers

Catholic Charities of Spokane is looking for mentors to serve the Childbirth and Parenting Alone (CAPA) program.

The mentors, or Doulas, would support and encourage young, single pregnant women during the prenatal, birthing and early parenting stages.

The volunteers must be a parent, have a high school diploma or equivalency and be at least 26 years old.

Buddhist retreat

The Spokane Buddhist Temple will offer a two-day retreat June 22-23 at the Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute, 4000 W. Randolph Road.

The retreat, “Steps for a Positive Change,” will begin at 7 p.m. June 22 and will feature speaker Bhante Seelawimala, a Sri Lankan Theravada monk and professor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies in Berkeley, Calif.

The cost of the retreat is $60 and includes lodging, breakfast and lunch. For more information, call 747-6136.

Education

“Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway Ave., will host Project HOPE (Helping Our Young People Excel) with a Friday night film series focusing on gangs.

The film, for adult viewing only, will be shown Friday and June 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It explores the history of gangs in America, discusses the Crips and will follow five gang members from childhood to adulthood.

Project HOPE provides anti-gang prevention and intervention services in Spokane.

“St. Joseph Family Center, 1016 N. Superior St., will offer “God’s Extravagant Love,” an educational retreat July 6 at 6:30 p.m. through July 8 at 1 p.m.

The retreat will discuss “Love and the Primacy of Christ,” “Creation and the Humility of God,” and “The Dignity of the Human Person.

The cost is $225 and includes lodging and meals. A $25 deposit is due Wednesday.

Vacation Bible school

Summit Ridge Christian Fellowship, 5607 S. Freya St., will present “South of the Border with Jesus,” June 26 through 29 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Kids in kindergarten through the sixth grade are invited. The cost is $5 and T-shirts will be available for sale.
