No more pencils, no more books.

The last day of school for Spokane County school districts either has passed or is nearing.

Here’s a list of the last days of school this year:

Today: West Valley and East Valley.

Friday: Spokane Public Schools, Mead, Cheney, Medical Lake and Central Valley.

Tuesday: Nine Mile Falls.

Already out: Deer Park, Riverside, Freeman and Liberty.

Sidewalk becomes canvas

Students in a creative-drawing class at Rogers High School spent one morning this month creating sidewalk chalk-art portraits of people who inspire them.

Students in Tom Pettoello’s class were asked to choose a person who has provided guidance in their lives and write a brief paper about that person.

Students then created portraits and drew them on the sidewalks outside the school.

The chalk-art portraits included parents, friends, teachers, political leaders and entertainment personalities.

“Mrs. Lawson really helped me make it through the year,” said student Levi Allen, 18, who drew a portrait of the social studies teacher. “I don’t know if I could have done it without her.”

Student advisers to school board selected

Spokane Public Schools board of directors recently selected two students to serve next year as advisers.

Shadle Park High School sophomore Anna Shives and Lewis and Clark High School junior Kate Hellenthal will be nonvoting members of the five-member school board. Their terms will begin in August.

Hellenthal, who volunteers with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, is a peer mediator at LC and a member of Youth Leadership Spokane.

By serving as a school board adviser, she says, she hopes to gain a greater understanding of how district decisions are made and acquire more leadership skills, according to a news release from the district’s community relations office.

Shives is a member of Shadle Park’s dance and volleyball teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 4.0 grade-point average.

Shives says she hopes to gain leadership skills and learn how to interact with adult professionals.

NC alumni awards

North Central High School recently honored four distinguished alumni.

They are Logan Olson, of Logan Magazine, for being an inspiration to people with disabilities; Bill Diedrick Jr., a football coach; Dr. Stephen Boswell, chief executive officer of Fenway Community Health and professor of medicine at Harvard University; and David Sandberg honored posthumously as a wrestler and coach.
