AREA ROUNDUP: Eastern will tackle Buffaloes

Eastern Washington University has agreed in principle to play Colorado during its 2008 football season, the school announced Tuesday.

The Eagles will meet the Buffaloes for a non-conference game on Sept. 6 at Boulder, Colo. It will be EWU’s first game against a Big 12 Conference foe.

Eastern is scheduled to play three non-conference games during 2008.

Colorado lost to EWU’s Big Sky Conference rival Montana State 19-10 last September.

Eastern opens its 2007 season at home Aug. 31 against Montana-Western. The Eagles will play non-conference games against UC Davis in 2007 and 2008.

“Spokane Shock defensive back Nygel Rogers was selected as arenafootball2 defensive player of the week, the league announced.

Rogers returned two interceptions for touchdowns Saturday during the Shock’s 60-28 home win over the Boise Burn. Rogers also had 5 1/2 tackles and four pass breakups.

Rogers is the second Shock player to earn a player of the week award this season. Wide receiver Antwone Savage was named offensive player of the week three weeks ago.

The Shock will play the Central Valley Coyotes on Saturday night at Fresno, Calif. Spokane leads the Coyotes by one-half game in the West Division of the American Conference.

Women’s soccer

Former Gonzaga University player Dave Thorvilson has been named head coach at Carroll College, the Helena school announced.

Thorvilson served as an assistant for former Saints coach Mark Hiemenz, who was hired as an assistant coach at Boise State earlier this spring.

Thorvilson, the program’s fourth head coach, played at GU from 1994-95 and at Montana State University from 1997-98.
