NASCAR BUSCH

Mexico 200

Site: Mexico City. Schedule: Saturday, qualifying (ESPN2, 8:30 a.m.); Sunday, race (ESPN2, 11 a.m.). Track: Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez (road course, 2.518 miles). Race distance: 201.44 miles, 80 laps. Last race: Matt Kenseth took control in the closing laps at California Speedway, driving off with his fourth Busch victory in 12 tries on the 2-mile oval. Casey Mears grabbed second place 12 laps from the end and gave a big effort to try to catch Kenseth, but he still finished about five lengths behind. Last year: Denny Hamlin pitted early, then stayed out of trouble to hold on and win the second Busch race in Mexico. It was the first career Busch win in 39 starts for Hamlin, who started second and pitted during the first caution, then outdueled pole-sitter and road course ace Boris Said by 1.53 seconds. Fast facts: As usual, last week’s race was dominated by Nextel Cup regulars, with those drivers finishing in 15 of the top 16 positions. Only Regan Smith, who will run part-time in Cup this season, was able to break into that group, finishing ninth. … This is the first of three road-course races this season. … Kevin Harvick (Daytona) and Kenseth (California) are the first drivers to sweep the Busch and Nextel Cup events to open a season. … The inaugural race in 2005 was the series’ first outside the United States. Next race: Sam’s Town 300, March 10, Las Vegas.

NASCAR NEXTEL CUP

Last race: With crew chief Robbie Reiser back home in North Carolina on a NASCAR-enforced absence from the racetrack, Matt Kenseth drove the Roush Fenway Racing Ford to the front and his veteran crew gave him a series of sparkling pit stops, including a very fast one near the end of the Auto Club 500 that put him into the lead for good. Kenseth, who got caught up in the last-lap melee the previous week at the Daytona 500 and wound up 27th after starting that lap in third, stayed away from trouble this time and took the lead with the fast stop during a caution 23 laps from the finish. Next race: UAW-Daimler Chrysler 400, March 11, Las Vegas.

NASCAR CRAFTSMAN TRUCKS

Last race: Five days after being passed on the last lap and losing to Kevin Harvick by the length of a hood in the Daytona 500, Mark Martin was dominating the race at California Speedway before Ron Hornaday Jr. bumped him out of the lead on a restart with five laps to go. Former series champion Mike Skinner jumped past Hornaday into the lead before the caution flag came out and stayed out front, earning his 20th truck victory. Next race: American Commercial Lines 200, March 16, Hampton, Ga.

NHRA

Last event: Former Funny Car champion Tony Pedregon set a national elapsed time record en route to his 33rd career victory, highlighting a record-setting weekend at Firebird International Raceway. Pedregon’s opening-round run of 4.701 seconds certified his 4.659-second qualifying time within the required 1 percent, making it an official NHRA record worth 20 bonus points in the standings. He then defeated Robert Hight in the final. Rod Fuller and Kurt Johnson also raced to victories in the Checker Schuck’s Kragen NHRA Nationals. Next event: ACDelco Gatornationals, March 18, Gainesville, Fla.
