Seahawks show Wistrom the door

Rarely does a high-priced free agent play out the entire length of the deal in today’s NFL, and so the six-year, $33 million deal that Grant Wistrom signed in 2004 was unlikely to ever get paid in full.

After the addition of another expensive defensive end, the thin ice finally broke for Wistrom on Thursday.

The Seattle Seahawks have told Wistrom that he will be released. Rather than pay the $3.5 million base salary he was due to receive in the fall – that doesn’t include the $2.3 million prorated signing bonus that will still affect the team’s cap – the Seahawks will part ways with Wistrom. He could return at a smaller price.

The move comes in the same week that the Seahawks signed defensive end Patrick Kerney to a six-year, $39 million contract.

Holland let go at San Diego

Brad Holland’s 13-year run as basketball coach at San Diego ended when the school bought out the final year of his contract.

Holland was 200-176, with one NCAA tournament appearance and no regular-season West Coast Conference championships.

“We need to move our program so that we’re competitive in the upper quartile of our conference,” athletic director Ky Snyder said.

“There wasn’t a lot of talk about the reasons, exactly, but this is what the university has decided to do,” Holland said.

The Toreros were 18-14 this season and finished fifth in the WCC.

Sticker slip hurts Nevada

Nevada guard Kyle Shiloh suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of the No. 10 Wolf Pack’s 88-56 win over Idaho and could miss the rest of the postseason.

Nevada coach Mark Fox said Shiloh, a three-year starter, slipped on a logo sign on the court in the second half. The coach criticized the use of the promotional signs.

“He’s probably done for the year,” said Fox. “Let that be a statement that if you put those stickers on the floor, you put kids at risk.”
