Roundup : Wolfpack score upset over Duke

Freshman Brandon Costner scored a career-high 30 points and Engin Atsur scored all 21 of his points after halftime, helping the 10th-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack defeat defending tourney champion Duke 85-80 in overtime Thursday night at Tampa, Fla.

No. 21 Duke (22-10) had won seven of the previous eight ACC tournament titles, including the past two, but entered the league’s signature event this year as the seventh seed, the Blue Devils’ lowest seeding since 1995.

North Carolina State (16-14) avenged a 23-point regular-season loss to Duke.

Miami 67, (17) Maryland 62: Jack McClinton scored 17 points, Brian Asbury added 12 and the undermanned Hurricanes (12-19) upset the Terrapins (24-7).

Florida State 67, Clemson 66: Al Thornton’s free throw with 1.5 seconds remaining capped a 25-point, 11-rebound performance and gave the Seminoles (20-11) a victory over the Tigers (21-10).

Wake Forest 114, Georgia Tech 112 (2OT): Harvey Hale scored 21 points after regulation and helped the Demon Deacons (15-15) beat the Yellow Jackets (20-11).

Big East

(9) Georgetown 62, Villanova 57: Roy Hibbert scored eight of his 14 points in Georgetown’s opening 26-2 run, and the Hoyas (24-6) held on for a victory over the Wildcats (22-10) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament at New York.

(12) Louisville 82, West Virginia 71 (2OT): Terrence Williams scored 21 points as the Cardinals (23-8) beat the Mountaineers (22-9).

(13) Pittsburgh 89, (18) Marquette 79: Aaron Gray scored 22 points to help the Panthers (26-6) beat the Golden Eagles (24-9).

(20) Notre Dame 89, Syracuse 83: Russell Carter scored 24 points to help the Fighting Irish (24-6) beat the Orange (22-10).

Big Ten

Michigan State 62, Northwestern 57: Drew Neitzel scored 20 points and Travis Walton hit two free throws with 10.4 seconds left to lead the Spartans (22-10) to a victory over the Wildcats (13-18) in the first round of the tournament at Chicago.

Michigan 49, Minnesota 40: The Wolverines (21-11) got 14 points from Dion Harris and beat the Golden Gophers (9-22).

Illinois 66, Penn State 60: Chester Frazier scored a career-high 21 points as the Illini (22-10) survived a late scare from the Nittany Lions (11-19).

Big 12

Texas Tech 81, Colorado 71: Martin Zeno matched his career high with 28 points as the Red Raiders (21-11) beat the Buffaloes (7-20) in the first round of the conference tournament at Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma 68, Iowa State 63: Nate Carter scored 22 points as the Sooners (16-14) beat the Cyclones (15-16).

Oklahoma State 54, Nebraska 39: Mario Boggan scored 11 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as the Cowboys (21-11) beat the Cornhuskers (17-14).

Baylor 97, Missouri 83: Curtis Jerrells scored a career-high 31 points and Henry Dugat added 25, sparking the Bears (15-15) to a win over the Tigers (18-12).

SEC

LSU 76, (22) Tennessee 67 (OT): Glen “Big Baby” Davis scored 25 points and had 15 rebounds as the Tigers (17-14) defeated the Volunteers (22-10) in the first round of the conference tournament at Atlanta.

Kentucky 79, Alabama 67: Ramel Bradley and Randolph Morris scored 17 points apiece to lead five players in double figures as the Wildcats (21-10) beat the Crimson Tide (20-11).

Georgia 80, Auburn 65: Levi Stukes scored 22 points, Takais Brown added 19 and the Bulldogs (18-12) set up a crucial game with Florida by beating the Tigers (17-15).

Arkansas 82, South Carolina 52: Gary Ervin and Darian Townes each scored 16 points as the Razorbacks (19-12) kept their tournament hopes alive with a win over the Gamecocks (14-16).

(5) Memphis 92, Marshall 71: At Memphis, Tenn., Doneal Mack and Jeremy Hunt scored 19 points apiece to lead the Tigers (28-3) to a victory over the Thundering Herd (13-19) in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament.

(23) BYU 77, TCU 64: At Las Vegas, Trent Plaisted scored 22 points, Mike Rose added 16, including four 3-pointers and Jimmy Balderson chipped in 10 as the Cougars (24-7) defeated the Horned Frogs (13-17) in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.

(25) UNLV 80, Utah 54: At Las Vegas, Kevin Kruger scored 21 points and led the Runnin’ Rebels (26-6) to a quarterfinal win over the Utes (11-19) in the Mountain West tournament.

(11) Oklahoma 78, (18) Baylor 64: At Oklahoma City, Courtney Paris had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the Sooners (25-4) beat the Lady Bears (25-7) in a Big 12 Conference tournament semifinal.

Iowa State 57, (13) Texas A&M 51: At Oklahoma City, Heather Ezell and Alison Lacey scored 11 points apiece and the Cyclones (25-7) beat the Aggies (24-6) to advance to the Big 12 championship game.

Weber State 77, Portland State 67: Chelsey Warburton scored 30 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Wildcats (17-13) to a victory over the Vikings (12-18) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament at Missoula.

Northern Arizona 76, Montana State 53: Alyssa Wahl scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Lumberjacks (19-11) to a victory over the Bobcats (13-16).
