Rahe named Big Sky Coach of the Year

Weber State’s Randy Rahe was named Big Sky Conference men’s Coach of the Year after his team went 11-5 in the Big Sky, 20-11 overall.

The Wildcats are preparing for a first-round NCAA tournament matchup with No. 2 seed UCLA.

•Ron Jirsa has been fired as Marshall men’s coach after a 13-19 season.

•Colorado State men’s coach Dale Layer was fired after a 17-13 season.

•Wyoming coach Steve McClain was fired, days after the Cowboys ended a fourth straight season without reaching postseason play.

U.S. eases past Sweden

Abby Wambach scored two goals and Carli Lloyd got her fourth of the tournament, leading the United States women over Sweden 3-2 for a place in the Algarve Cup final in Vila Real De Santo Antonio, Portugal.

The United States will play Denmark in Wednesday’s final.

•The United States will play China (June 16) and Brazil (June 23) in warmup matches before heading to the Women’s World Cup.

Mackey maintains lead

Lance Mackey maintained his lead in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race – but just by minutes.

Mackey was the first musher to arrive in Koyuk, Alaska, taking about a 3-hour rest. He and his 13 dogs left Koyuk at 12:13 p.m., 14 minutes before Paul Gebhardt arrived.

Gebhardt didn’t rest long; the 50-year-old had his 10 dogs back on the trail for the 48-mile segment to Elim after resting just 9 minutes.

Mackey, of Fairbanks, is trying to join father Dick and brother Rick in becoming an Iditarod champion.

•Former Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith has been hired by ESPN as a studio analyst for its NFL pregame coverage.

Smith, the National Football League’s all-time leading rusher, will appear on the network’s NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown shows. He will also appear as an analyst on ESPN Radio and ESPN.com, the network announced.

•Mitch Cozad, the former Northern Colorado backup punter accused of stabbing the starter, pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted murder and assault.

Cozad remains free on $500,000 bail. If convicted, he could face up to 48 years in prison.

•The investigation that shook cycling ended without indictments when the judge said he could not charge anyone because Spain’s new doping law was not in place when the case broke last May in Madrid.

•Track coach Remi Korchemny agreed to permanently stay out of elite-level coaching, marking the first time a U.S. Anti-Doping Agency case has led to a coach being banished for doping violations.

•Four-time Olympic swimming champion Inge de Bruijn has announced her retirement.

•Five-time boxing world champion Johnny Tapia was hospitalized in critical condition after an apparent cocaine overdose in Albuquerque.

•Bud Allin, a Vietnam War veteran who won five times on the PGA Tour, has died of cancer in Hemet, Calif. He was 62.
