Religion Notebook : Book burnings focus of traveling exhibit

The Gonzaga University Foley Center Library, 502 E. Boone Ave., is displaying a traveling exhibition, “Fighting the Fires of Hate: America and the Nazi Book Burnings,” through May 5.

The exhibition was created by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Fire was a lesser-known symbol of the Nazi party: torchlight parades were held to mark the beginning of the Nazi revolution, and book burnings were common.

The exhibition will feature news coverage of the book burnings and displays of artifacts and documents.

The hours of operation are Mondays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m.

Concerts and performances

“The Trinity Lutheran College Touring Ensemble from Issaquah, Wash., will perform at two churches this weekend.

The group will perform its Lenten concert, “Our Song in the Night,” Saturday at 6 p.m. at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9706 N. Division St. Dinner at 5 p.m. costs $5.

During the 8:30 a.m. service Sunday, the group will perform again.

“Maxwell’s International Dance Workshop will perform for the Baha’i New Year, or Naw Ruz, celebration Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Center Pointe Event Facility, 1408 N. Washington St.

The dancers are students from the seventh through the 12th grades from diverse countries and religious and cultural backgrounds.

The performance is free.

Speaker events

“The Spokane Buddhist Temple, 927 S. Perry St., will present Bill Hirsch and Joe Schwab who will speak on the topic, “From Shakyamuni to Shinran: Tracing the Historical and Philosophical Development of Pureland Buddhism,” Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Hirsch and Schwab are minister assistants from the Seattle Betsuin Temple.

The Rev. Scott Kinder-Pyle will be the guest preacher at Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 1926 W. Chelan Ave., Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. service.

Kinder-Pyle is the organizing pastor of the Latah Valley Presbyterian Church, the newest Presbyterian congregation in Spokane.
