Area Roundup: Bulldogs win in new stadium

The Gonzaga baseball team opened its new facility, Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field, on a winning note Thursday, earning a 9-4 non-conference win over Rider.

Josh Monroe (3-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Monroe pitched six innings, allowing eight hits on three runs and striking out six. Rider starter Jimmer Kennedy (0-2) took the loss.

Gonzaga improved to 12-10 on the season while Rider fell to 2-8.

Basketball

Senior guard Janeen Nelson scored a game-high 17 point and seniors Ashley Baker and Terri Wittmer added 15 apiece as Lewis-Clark State rolled past Columbia College of Missouri (26-8) 86-66 in the opening round of the NAIA national tournament in Jackson, Tenn.

The Warriors (31-2) advance to play Cumberland of Tennessee in the Sweet 16, at 10:30 a.m. today

“The annual Spokane Stars Shootout will be conducted Saturday and Sunday at University High School. Pool play for 26 entered AAU teams will begin at 9 a.m. and run through 9 p.m. on Saturday and conclude Sunday again at 9, with championship-bracket play to follow starting at 2 p.m. Tournament passes cost $10 for adults and $9 for children older than 8 and senior citizens. Daily passes are $6 and $5.

Golf

Gonzaga’s Mary Kate Morgan defeated North Texas’ Tara Lambright in a playoff to win the Bobcat Desert Golf Classic at Play Valley Golf Club at Goodyear, Ariz.

Morgan and Lambright finished the 54 holes at 225, but Morgan won on the second playoff hole by making eagle.

The Bulldogs finished fourth at 926. Sacramento State and Cal Poly tied for first at 915, with Sacramento State winning the chip-off for the team title.

Arena football

Spokane Shock quarterback Brett Dietz has signed a practice squad contract with the AFL’s Kansas City Brigade.

The Shock also announced that defensive back Alex Teems, a former Washington State player, has joined the team.
