Gonzaga, Washington State pick up wins

Dustin Colclough went 2 for 3 with four RBIs, including a three-run home run in the fourth inning, as Gonzaga routed visiting Rider 13-3 in a non-conference baseball game Friday at GU’s Patterson Complex.

The Bulldogs (13-10) scored six runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 11-0. Aaron McGuinness had three hits, scored three runs and hit a two-run home run in the second for Gonzaga.

Shadle Park graduate Brandon Harmon (1-4) picked up the win while Mike Petrowski (2-1) took the loss for Rider (2-9).

“Paul Gran tied a Washington State University record with two triples as the Cougars topped Illinois-Chicago 5-2 in the opening game of a three-game non-conference series at Bailey-Brayton Field.

Wayne Daman Jr. earned the win for WSU while Zach Peterson took the loss for the Flames.

The Cougars improved to 11-6 on the season while Illinois-Chicago fell to 4-9.

Men’s basketball

Three North Idaho players were named to the All-Scenic West Athletic Conference team.

Sophomore Nick Livi is a first-team all-conference and all-tournament selection. Freshman Shawn Henderson made second-team all-conference and sophomore Scott Stockwell earned honorable mention.

Track and field

The Eastern Washington men tied for fifth in the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship preseason poll. The women’s team was picked to finish eighth. Weber State’s men’s and women’s teams were selected to finish first.

The outdoor season begins this weekend in the Dusty Lane Invitational at Spokane Community College.

“Whitworth’s Benjamin Spaun took first place in the men’s decathlon with a total of 4,427 points at the Whitworth Multievent Invitational at Whitworth’s Boppel Track.

Eastern Washington’s Steven Bacon came in second with 5,593 points.

In the women’s heptathlon, EWU’s Jessica Duran took first place with a total of 4,427 points.

“Gonzaga Prep graduate and current Arizona State track star Christopher Nuess finished 10th at the NCAA Men’s Division I Championships at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

Football

Wideout Lynzell Jackson and linebacker Kelvin Morris have been added to the Spokane Shock roster, the team announced.

The Shock open the season at home March 31 at the Arena.

Rowing

The Gonzaga men had three first-place finishes during a regatta with Orange Coast College, UC San Diego and Washington State at Silver Lake.

In the first race, the Zags varsity 8 bettered the time of UC San Diego by more than 2 seconds.

Gonzaga earned its second victory of the day with a win over Washington State in the junior varsity 8 race.

The Bulldogs’ varsity 8 team earned its second victory in the final race of the day.

Gonzaga finished the race in a time of 5:59.55, while Orange Coast completed with a mark of 6:14.12.

Women’s golf

Eastern Washington University’s Chloe Nelson was honored as the co-Big Sky Conference Golfer of Week after shooting a 3-under-par 69 in the final round of the UNLV Spring Invitational. She finished the tournament at 5-over 221, good enough for 29th.

Nelson shared the honor with Sacramento State University’s Kim Coppin.
